hell divers 2 must have been a giga-flop because it was a live services game that cost $40

I'll go so far as to say that monetization of a game does not actually matter in the least. You can be the scummiest developer in the world with the most predatory monetization practices, and it will sell tons of copies if it's actually good and appealing.
In the end of the day it’s all about the fundamentals .

Not gonna lie, I was half expecting the Sony higher-ups to even go as far as sacrifice their own retirement funds to keep this **** alive as long as possible to spite and demoralize us.

I guess not even the big corpos can afford to do that anymore. lmfao

I wonder if Sony can do a tax write off on this?. This game and the acquisition of Bungie are two of the worst decisions the company's made in decades. But sadly it has little to do with the fact that the games are pozzed garbage. Despite recent Cinematic efforts like God of War and Last of Us being just as demoralizing, they've been massive successes. So this game's failure doesn't mean that we'll start to see Based games again, if anything it just means we'll be seeing less multiplayer centric games. A good start, but not enough.

It was for pragmatic reasons. It would have cost more money to keep the servers up then refund people. One of the big reasons why Rocksteady and WB lost so much money with Suicide Squad was because of their inability to admit failure, shut down the servers and just refund everybody who bought the game. Instead they have kept the game alive just out of sheer spite towards DC fans and gamers who hate the game and Sweet Baby Inc. Sony maybe ******** but they aren't as ******** as WB. They will abandon a money sink and take the L instead of wasting money just to spite detractors.

And... it's over.

Allegedly, Sony pulled the plug on the servers in the middle of the night with less than 10 players online.

Actually, The Last of Us 2 was a financial flop. It has only sold around 10 million copies in four years. Compare this to Baldur's Gate 3 that sold 10 million copies in its first few weeks of release. The Last of Us 2 damaged Sony so bad financially that it was the reason why Sony is now allowing their games to go on PC in order to recoup the losses that the game gave them. It is also why Sony has not allowed Neil Cuckmann anywhere near another video game project for the time being. God of Soy 2 and Spider-**** 2 were also financial flops for Sony as they cost way too much to make. God of Soy 2 cost around 200-250 million while Spider-**** 2 was around 350-400 million. Sony thought those two games would drive people into buying a PS5 but it was anything but. Meanwhile, PS5's are sold out all over China with Sony having a hard time reaching demand because of Black Myth: Wukong. It just takes one game to make a console sell well but it sure as hell isn't a game that comes from the West.

Surely those games made a profit, unless Sony were stupid enough to invest hundreds of millions they knew they wouldn't get back. The pivot to PC is simply to make more money, and because they are aware that exclusive titles no longer hold the sort of sway they once had.

Sony invested a lot of money in those games thinking that they would drive people into buying a PS5. After all, you need to have good games to give people a reason for buying a console. They threw so much money around it was as if it was going out of style. Helped that they were getting BlackRock ESG money which all these companies like Sony thought would last forever. The ESG money well is now beginning to dry up as we have been seeing these past few months. Sony and many of these other companies don't have the ESG money to be a life raft anymore. It is sink or swim now.

If they could force people into their console ecosystem by holding games hostage, they would.
Give them credit: they're learning they can't.
Hopefully the console era is dying.

Now do what Valve did (eventually) and what Microsoft lied about: make the next consoles stripped-down standardized PCs and make the games for a single platform.
(Nintendo can still do whatever. They're a different track entirely.)

Instead, from the genesis of the Xbox on, the intent was to lock people into that hardware running their entertainment, from games to videos to social media. How'd that work out, corporate assholes?

I've seen the $200 Million figure being passed around a lot, and if that is indeed how much it cost to 'make', imagine the marketing cost. It's likely the same amount if not higher. Expensive shorts, Blur Studios trailers, a deal with Amazon. No doubt a lot of other assorted merchandise was planned too. All of that is a sunk cost that Sony has no hope of ever recovering.

Meanwhile their best games in the PS2 and PS3 eras probably cost no more than $10-$50 million each.

Imagine McDonalds came up with a **** burger and it's literally just a turd in a box. You don't even get the bun. They know no one wants it but they think if they market the **** out of it, everyone will be brainwashed into thinking they want it. On top of that, they brow beat you that this is what pajeets eat so if you don't eat it you're racist.

Less than two weeks later they wonder what went wrong. Their stores have a total of 10 pajeets in at any one time and no one else.

Oh I would not be surprised if the games real cost was somewhere around 400-500 million. What shocks me is how Sony, after taking one look at the character designs, actually had faith that this game would be the next big thing. If this game doesn't put an end to the myth of the "Modern Audience" I don't know what will.

To illustrate just how badly mismanaged Sony has become under the leadership of commiefornians, at one point they had 12 GaaS projects in development:

1. Concord - death by lulz
2. Firewall Ultra - never heard of it, apparently nobody else did either, flop
3. Helldivers 2 - will be a case study on how to mismanage a project into ruin
4. Fairgame$ - we wuz Robin Hood, like to dislike ratio on the trailer makes it a guaranteed flop, might be canceled before release
5. Marathon - beta isn't going very well by all accounts, might very well be forgotten upon launch, Bungie is a walking dead man
6. Guerilla's Horizon project - based on the most astrosurfed IP in existence, other than desperate Sony shills trying to justify their DRM brick, nobody cares
7. NCSoft's Horizon MMO - same as above, why the **** are they making two projects based on the same **** IP?
8. The Last of Us MP - as RangerBoo said, TLOU2 killed the franchise and likely did mortal damage to Naughty Dog
9. Twisted Metal Project - cancelled
10. Insomniac's Spiderman MP game - cancelled
11. PS London's project - studio closed down
12. Deviation's project - studio closed down

And on top of this, Sony has no major release planned until April of next year at the earliest, and even that claim is dubious, since there's every chance there could be delays.

Sony killed all their Japanese studios to create woke GaaS slop nobody wants and cinematic experiences that cost more than a Hollywood blockbuster and barely break even.

They're ******. Even if every canceled GaaS turd they had in development cost less than $50 million, that's still another Concord's worth of losses.

In fact, they're so desperate for cash they've announced that they are raising the price of the PS5 in Japan, which is unheard of as far as I know. Aren't consoles meant to become cheaper as you get further and further into the generation?
