Tried the demo for this, the characters are ugly and I can see the downscaling on character creation so I didn't even go beyond that. Unrealslop.

What rpg has the biggest party size?
I'm going to guess ToEE but could be wrong. I just remember it being very big.

The Last Remnant, kinda. In this game, you do not directly control each individual party members. Instead, you control five parties as if they were each a party member. So when you command a party - like you would a party member - to cast healing magick on another party, then ALL of the capable party members in that party do so. You can assign party members to each party. IIRC the limit was up to 18 total party members, split amongst 4 or 5 parties. But again, you are only actually controlling 4 or 5 real units (the parties).

There's one of those Japanese DRPGs called Labrynth of Gallery or something similar that has 30 or 40 units in the party per battle.

If Kenshi counts, IIRC 20-50 by default and 256 with mods.

Perhaps the most noticeable thing nobody discusses anymore are flight sims. Fans of flight sims used to make up a significant portion of the gaming audience.

I actually don't remember well. The game was released around 2006 and I remember playing it as a really small kid, so it must had been around the release. I have memories of A-GEAR but not clear. I remember I was confused by a mechanic where you'd attach/land or something like this?

I will probably download the game once I'm done with SWTOR and see if it runs on Linux. I bet memories will flow in.

Yes, the A-gear was the flying tank that could land.

I would not recommend the official servers as they added the literal P2W slot machine that could give you recolors of the boss armors. There are private server projects like Chrome Rivals, but IIRC they were nowhere near as active as the official servers were during the weekend mothership wars back in the day.

@Val the Moofia Boss I think I've plenty of time with SWTOR left. I also may try private WildStar servers, have a sneak peak into how Once Human is faring, maybe turn on Conan Exiles due to the Conan film inspiration... I've plenty of stuff on my list. More than I would if I was paying. I'll bear that in mind. I bet private servers run better on Linux too.

Flight Sims still exist. We have all the various spaceplane games like Elite Dangeresque. All the various actual plane games like War Thunder. And, of course, actual Flight Sims like Microslop Flight Simulator.

But the reason flight sims are no longer a major part of the gaming audience is because the bar on the gaming audience has dropped. It used to be that gamers were characterized by people who probably had the intellectual capacity to handle being pilots. Nowadays, most gamers are drooling phonetards and dirty console peasants who demonstrably couldn't, so naturally, are not into flight sims. This is also why there's been a decline in ANOTHER formerly popular genre, the Asteroids-like.

I don't know why Pillars combat is more fun than the Pathfinder games' combat, but it is. Somebody tell me why I feel this way.

hit-or-miss AC with (almost) no damage reduction isn't actually fun?

Also forgot that the pathfinder games have zero AI, enemies just run at you and attack the nearest target.

Is adding threat/taunting/tanking mechanics added to systems that don't have them in tabletop preferable to enemies that just intelligently focus fire your squishiest guys every time?

You're supposed to use positioning + attack of opportunities

Actually can't remember once having to use chokepoint tactics in the pathfinder games

There was a mod for Kingmaker that adjusted the AI to focus on lowest AC rather than whoever was closest, but it just ended up having the same problem with running past your tanks.

This got some replies, wanted to say I'm excluding things like tacticool hybrids, RTS hybrids, etc.,

But it appears ToEE has a max party size of 8, which isn't all that big, I thought it was bigger.

There are several RPGs with max party size of 8, for example Wizardry 8 and Grimoire.

Soul in game design is underrated, AD&D XP tables with no formula and each class leveling at different speeds was soulful, each class having the same XP formula for leveling is soulless.

D&D 3.5e / Pathfinder typed bonuses are another example. It sorta feels arbitrary at first, but it's actually diegetic. Beats out soulless 'balanced' formulas and such. :pipe-thinking:

Perhaps the take away is designers should try to make every rule make sense in the game world.
