Hello, I'd like to report a time rape.
Image
Image
I merely agreed to help a guy take back his house from raiders and the game teleported me there, "ah sure, that's convenient" I thought and went along with sweeping the place clean. The game also teleported me back to town but as I decided to check on when a caravan escort job would be available, I soon realized that 23 days had just vanished. :old2:
Thank **** I checked the time soon after the quest, otherwise I might've not even noticed as I went my merry way.

Has been over a decade since I played Fallout. There's some rough edges, certainly, but it's still a great game that trusts the player with a lot of freedom. I'd also say that it is a gritty game, but not a difficult one. The designers were more concerned with enabling interactions. Unlike games of today it is fun to explore the locations and sneak around.

The first time I played it I did a melee build and only used the dog companion. Though small guns is a path of less resistance, I think just about any character could make it through the game. The maps have a lot of fallback options in the form of items and dialog or simply running away. I have two gripes about the game. First, there's a number of interactions that are easy to miss because the sprites look the same as other sprites on the same screen. Second, the character building system doesn't really allow you to make informed decisions the first time you play the game.

Somehow the interface, while somewhat cumbersome, is less annoying than other titles of the same era. I wonder if we'll ever see the "right click to rotate through action type" again.

Done, this low int build kind of sucks tbh.
  • You'd miss a large portion of contents & have to resort on meta-gaming since none of these cracka *** is willing to talk.
  • That also means no power armor unless I was missing something out.
  • You are underpowered until you find the powerfist, even then it's still nowhere near as powerful as the range sniper build.
At least the combat is still manageable since the enemy AI is quite dumb, just camp in a corner and wait until they come. I also believe that you can skip the majority of combat if you have both high sneak skill and stealth boy, but I didn't try.

Since we just had a turn-based game I'm nominating a more action-oriented game for next month. The RPG with the best physics gameplay... Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.

From the video I just watched it has better\smoother combat than Skyrim.

Yeah, no ****. Wheelchair boxing has better\smoother combat than Skyrim.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic isn't exactly an RPG but, boy, is it ******* fun to play!

It's as much an RPG as any other real-time game in JAG.

I'm pretty sure Fallout was the first contact I had with a cRPG. My brother was playing it and he told me I wouldn't care about it, but I did. I tried playing but never got really far as a 6 y/o whose first language isn't English. Replaying the game makes it very clear as to why: progression in Fallout is far from linear, there's plenty of back and forth. First cRPG I actually finished was Baldur's Gate and that game can be finished by someone who doesn't read English. Just go to the place mentioned in the last sentence of every letter you find in the baddie's corpse and you'll reach the final confrontation eventually. Fallout doesn't allow for anything similar, even the final vault is hidden behind a secret entrance. Anyway, the combat is actually worse than I remember, funnily enough. Playing a lot of other "fallout inspired" RPGs over the year can trick you into thinking things weren't that bad, but boy they most certainly were with damage being anything from 0 to 3000.

Even with the power armor? Try to keep distance or make them go friendly fire.

I got burned by confusing the quicksave/quickload keys and saved over my only save at the start of an impossible encounter. I have been ruined by modern autosaves. At least I learned my lesson before investing too much time.

Whoa, I can't imagine pre-buffing my party and instead of quicksaving going through the process of a hard save.

I rage quit 3 days in a row with Fallout here just due to traveling and random encounter with Gatling carrying super mutants and finding out the last save was a mission and a half ago cause it didn't save while loading the last time I entered a town or something. 1000% spoiled.

You know certain parts of the map have harder enemies than others, right?

Apparently I missed some firefighter protective gear somewhere along the way 'cause I just went from taking 0-20 damage per hit to 50-150. Flamethrowers are cool!

I'm gonna do this, I was interested in earning one of these badges first time I saw it but not at all with the games that were being selected (just not interested in beating again some of em, most just didn't want to even try) but this one I sure as hell can :pipe-hat:

Are there any special conditions for beating Fallout besides what's already stated in the first post? :read:

Source engine for what I recall, illegally btw. One of the best combats out there, shame that the AI and the game itself is buggy and janky af, though it's not common at all, very enjoyable that one.

I did an unarmed playthrough. Its a build that requires completion of the brotherhood initiation quest due to how underpowered it is, until you get the power fist. Then, the game becomes a Fist of the North Star simulator. Combined with reduced attack AP cost and power armor, you become unstoppable. Early game sucked ***, late game very fun.
