Favorite Japanese samurai films?
What's a 'samurai film'?
- They probably have Mifune or a Mifune-like in 'em.

It's been a while but I still remember Ran pretty well, probably because it's based on King Lear and has really striking cinematography.
If I think of any others I'll post em

Kagemusha, also by Kurosawa, is pretty good as well. It's less Shakespeare and more Sengoku period samurai with the same usage of visuals that Kurosawa is known for. Need to rewatch tbh.
Lots of kino scenes
Looking back on these really makes you realize how far the medium has fallen

Is this going to be a Kurosawa sweep?
I'd say The Hidden Fortress, probably. I haven't seen Inagaki's samurai trilogy, but it's on my short list to watch soon.

My favorite samurai movie is the one where he kills the bad guy with his Japanese sword.

I like the "lone wolf and cub" series, though I admit I am not an aficionado. by Kenji Misumi

Even though one of the Kurosawa movies or Harakiri is my favorite, The Sword of Doom is also fantastic, starring Tatsuya Nakadai.

I've seen a lot of Kurosawa films, can't recall the names off of the top of my head. Don't remember much about the stories except the visuals of armies moving around. The only Kurosawa film whose story I can remember is the one set in mid 20th century Japan about the middle-aged (or old?) man who gets diagnosed with a terminal disease and realizes that he's going to die alone with nothing to remember he existed, and gets a playground built.
