Darksiders

Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse – stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. In the slaughter that ensued, the demonic forces defeated the heavenly hosts and laid claim to the Earth.

Brought before the sacred Charred Council, War is indicted for his crimes and stripped of his powers. Dishonored and facing his own death, War is given the opportunity to return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible.

Hunted by a vengeful group of Angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vengeance and vindication.
  • Apocalyptic Power – Unleash the wrath of War, combining brutal attacks and supernatural abilities to decimate all who stand in your way
  • Extreme Arsenal – Wield a devastating arsenal of angelic, demonic and Earthly weapons; and blaze a trail of destruction atop Ruin, War’s fiery phantom steed
  • Epic Quest – Battle across the wastelands and demon-infested dungeons of the decimated Earth in your quest for vengeance and redemption
  • Character Progression – Uncover powerful ancient relics, upgrade your weapons, unlock new abilities, and customize your gameplay style
  • Battle Heaven and Hell – Battle against all who stand in your way - from war-weary angelic forces to Hell’s hideous demon hordes

I replayed Darksiders 1-3 a couple of months ago. And Genesis for the first time. Darksiders 1 isn't perfect, but it's still my favorite in the series and absolutely amazing for how well it ran at the time, how good it still looks, and how complete of a game it was for the first title made by a studio.

As for whether it is an RPG or not? I agree it feels more like an action adventure game. It has so many elements that you'd find in an RPG, like collectable upgrades, weapon skills improved via use, a shop where you buy equipment and potions, and so on that I think a discussion about what specifically it does or doesn't do that makes it not an RPG would be an interesting one. Everyone seemed to be fine with calling Raven's Cry an RPG so I'm left wondering if what people need to see something as an RPG is either ****** combat or a dialog wheel.

@Oyster Sauce I'll nominate Golf Story for next month.

As far as a badge goes, I could not get the blue horse skull with runes around it used as the saving/loading animation to work at 19px. It was also difficult to get the silhouette of War on his horse recognizable. So if anyone can get either of those ideas to work it would be welcome.

In the end I went with this piece of concept art which depicts the central McGuffin of the plot, the 7th Seal representing four horsemen:

Generally a good update with more resolution options. Main problem I encountered with it was music not playing in some cutscenes.

Edit: And as mentioned below, turn off the ****** filters that make the graphics look bad.

I found making this pin the most challenging. There's lots of cool artwork associated with the game, but none of it translates down to this size very well.

What about the collectible artifacts?

They're not plot relevant, but they do capture the game's aesthetic.

It's good overall. Just make sure you turn off Chrome FX and the vignette in the options menu. Also you probably want to use this guide to fix the low volume in cutscenes:

The second game's remaster is the one that's terrible. They ****** the art style up and darkened everything. Just download the original off the GoG pirate site if you want to play it.

Started Darksiders, now I see what this argument about RPGness is about. Seems more like an action game but the definition of an RPG for JAG is pretty broad.
What about the wrath icon for the badge? It's pretty simple in design so it might be suited for the badge quite well.

Could work. I associate that shape with Hearthstone, but there's probably a low chance of Hearthstone ever becoming an RPG and getting nominated to JAG.

This is what I think the pin should be, ideally:
Image

I could never resize it well due to the orientation of the visual information and the limited vertical space on a pin. I decided to trace and hand edit it to give the idea one more chance:

If I were to describe this game in a sentence, it'd be "slightly harder 3D Zelda with Warcraft aesthetics and storytelling." I'm not a fan of the latter, which is what turned me off from this when it first came out, but if you've got an itch for Zelda gameplay, this game delivers. Not a lot of tips or tricks to give, since Darksiders is very straightforward, but here's a note: I'm not really sure why the game gives you a scythe and a fist as weapons you can invest points into, since it railroads you into using the sword for the end game.

The sword is heavily favored throughout the game due to the XP system, limited currency for upgrades, and the sword being the only weapon that charges up chaos form unless you equip glyphs found late in the game.

I tried to use only the scythe this time and while it is effective at crowd control the sword is a strictly better choice.
