I'd rather have weapons and tools to make getting food easier over luxuries personally.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

I'm wondering now, could you actually sleep in the church if built, or would there be game-related restrictions to doing that? If I remember correctly, Rimworld required each colonist to have "beds" or some such...

If it would've been on the table, I would've made both characters I suggested Pagan. :smug:

We luckily find a few abandoned weapons in the fort. The sword goes to Sivan, while Elias, Oscar, Vergil, and William take spears. Hoss and Stack grab short bows. Some start clearing out dusty old skeletons and rubble while others start foraging for berries and mushrooms. People start claiming sleeping spots on the floor. It'll take a bit of wood to get everyone set up in a proper bed.

Chapter 2: Kalarion's Neck Gets Slashed

As the sun rises, plans are drawn up for some basic housing. I looked at a lot of blueprints and pictures of medieval peasant homes for inspiration rather than efficient little boxes (although a lot of real medieval homes kind of are just efficient little boxes anyway). Most seem to have a storage room called a buttery where they store, among other things, butter.

Image
Image

Vergil and Mathieu finish researching basic woodworking, which will allow us to saw raw wood into planks and craft basic ranged weapons.

Image

This is what our tech tree looks like, by the way. The numbers indicate how many research points it takes to unlock them by slaving away at a research bench. As our three smartest villagers, Mathieu, Old Man, and Elias (@Luckmann @ArcaneLurker @Tweed) can decide what they want to research. Otherwise I'm using a mod that picks a random project as soon as the current one finishes.

Image
Image
Image

Hoss and Vergil go to drive off an iconic European hyena that's a little too close to the fort.

Image

It charges Vergil in retaliation but Hoss manages to bring it down before it does any harm. These short bows are awful. They'd barely get a few shots in on a charging raider before they closed that gap. We'll have to make some better ones soon.

Image

Lathandra and Old Man start clearing some land to sow buckwheat. Without agricultural research we can't grow regular wheat to mill into flour, so we'll have to rely on hunting primarily for now. While walking by, William thought he heard them speak of "Gods" and not "God", but then again he's pretty groggy from sleeping on a stone floor the night prior.

Image
Image

Meanwhile, Oscar butchers the hyena from before, leaving us with meat, a hide that needs tanning or it'll spoil, and fat that can be rendered into tallow so long as we have salt.

Image

It seems that while Vergil despises Lemon, she can't help but be smitten by his good looks.

Image Image

It's taking a good while getting everything built with just four settlers who have 5 or more construction skill, but Stack and Kala exchange pleasantries as they finish our first little cabin :)
Because we have so many people, I'm shoving two beds in each home. The womenfolk have already claimed the existing bedrooms in the fort.

Image

While planting some onions, Lathandra is suddenly chased by a hyena!

Image

Out of ******* nowhere, Skull Smasher arrives and with a freakishly powerful critical hit, he destroys its nose.

Image

He gets out of the way of the hyena's claws and then quickly strikes it two more times in the head. The first blow takes an eye out, the second decapitates it. Skull Smasher has earned himself a spot in our little settlement and a crude wooden bed with that performance.

Image

Travelers spy the smoke from our fires and ask if they can stay the night. Considering that we still have people sleeping on the floor next to skeletons, we send them on their way. Setting up an inn in the future could be a decent source of income and boost relations with neighboring factions.

Image

Old Man has our first mental break and begins shouting insults at our poor research team. It's bad enough that they're working in a dark storage area. Morale is drastically low for everyone due to the limited food variety. Vergil eventually manages to calm him down.

Image

Luckily Kala gets around to building a cooking table so we can finally fry up all of this hyena meat.

Image

But Mathieu suddenly contracts the plague! Lathandra, as a midwife and former alchemist's apprentice, has decent medical skill. If the plague % reaches 100% completion before the immunity %, he's a goner. All we can do is let him rest and tend to him as needed.

Image

Hoss, our best cook by a decent margin, gets to work making simple meals as soon as he wakes up. Just in time too, this meat was about to spoil. Elias swaps his spear for Vergil's bow and gets ready to start hunting. Even though Hoss has a higher ranged skill, hunting proficiency is determined by shooting+animal levels. The boys have a quick meal in front of a starving Shani. Dudes rock!

Image
Image

Here's our work assignment menu by the way. Work is prioritized from lowest to highest number, left to right. Brighter squares indicate high skill levels, with golden ones meaning that person is excellent at something, and dark gray meaning they're ****. 15 villagers and not a single one is good at mining.

Image

It's a laborious day. Lots of sowing, building, processing, and cooking. Sivan heroically slays a rabid squirrel.

Image

Kala's neck is sliced wide ******* open in a construction accident involving a collapsing roof. He leaves a trail of blood as he stumbles to his bed. Lathandra manages to stop the bleeding. He'll survive, but he's in a lot of pain and his stats will suffer until it heals. Every workplace safety rule and regulation is written in blood!

Image
Image

Sivan decides since we're here for the long haul, we should name our faction and this specific settlement. Whichever post gets the most Agree stickers is what we'll go with I reckon.

Image

Here's what our little home looks like by the way.

Image

--------------------------------------------------

Cutting this short because I had to spend all of yesterday troubleshooting bugs (had to remake every ****** and restart the map) and then Vergil's ****** broke today sometime around Kala getting ****** up which led to another several hours of fixing mods. I'm cranky and it's all Vergil's fault.

I think the settlement should be called... Brocastle, and the faction name is the Order of the Knights of St. Rusty the Turtle.

I'm seeing "boil water" in there, leading to "Saunas", so that's my vote. Other than that, the old man is going to go for whatever leads to the production of alcohol. :toot:

Oh, and Band of the Rusty Turtle or Order of the Rusty Turtle has my vote for name, but Knights of St. Rusty sounds excellent too. As for the settlement, I have no idea, except I think that Brocastle sounds ********, sorry Stack. Maybe Quartzmount on account of the quartz in the stone around us (and has nothing to do with HQ), or something alluding to this G*d we're apparently worshiping. **** I dunno. Blood Creek on account of the blood that poured from Kal's neck?
