I can't speak to the pilots and their backstories/lore because, frankly, I don't care about the game's story. So, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that half of them are ****** or something.

More related to the gameplay, though, while the game describes itself as a strategic roguelike spaceship deckbuilder, I'd also be willing to throw elements of "puzzle game" in the mix, as well. I say this because a lot of the "difficulty" I experienced came in learning how to deal with the quirks of each enemy type, of which there are a lot. Back when I played, you also could back out of fights as long as it was before being destroyed. So, you could try them again if you saw the writing on the wall. Not sure if this was due to me playing on an easier setting or if this was a default.

And because I'm a dolt, the color system on ship parts, alongside the synergizing/theorycrafting, took a bit to get used to, but it eventually became second nature.
