Personally, I play Mobile Legends with friends. The game is ****, but it's just an opportunity for us to do something together while we're away.Nooneatall wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 00:53I play retro bowl on my phone sometimes as a time waster.
Honestly nope. My current phone is about 7 years old and I have no intention of chaning it because there's absolutely nothing worth playing on mobile.
My memories on this are really fuzzy because it was a long time ago. I once made an account for... Granblue Fantasy, maybe, to play on an Android emulator. On the advice of the internet, I made several accounts in a row using salted email addresses to get good pulls. After a few rounds of that, I logged in, read some dialogue, and then never touched it again. Haven't tried any other since.
I get very sad every time I hear of an interesting sounding game or entry in a series that turns out to be gacha.

I play Granblue Fantasy every now and then, usually when a new main story chapter drops or a story event that I am interested in happens like the anniversary or Dragon Knights events. It is a good visual novel/JRPG, I like the setting and characters, it has great art by Uematsu's apprentice Tsutomu Narita, good art by Hideo Minaba, and is almost fully voice acted. It is also far and away the most generous gacha game I have ever played. Three times per year (Christmas/New Year's, Anniversary event in late Februrary through March, and Summer event in August), they give you tens of thousands of crystals just for logging in, and hundreds of free draw roulettes. I have 500+ characters just from logging in during these events, more favorite characters than I have parties to put them in, and meta summons like Beezebulb or Lucifer or Yatima too. I have also never felt a need to grind to progress through the story.

My biggest complaint is that the story is undercut by the gacha format. The monetization model is really about selling people's emotional investment/interest in characters. It is not in a gacha game's financial interest to kill off a playable character that they have sold and people are invested in. You can kill off people in a $60 box purchase game like Suikoden, but most gachas don't do that, GBF included. So it is hard for the writers to generate tension and keep people turning the page to find out what happens next when you know none of the playables will die. Lately, GBF's modus operandi for keeping tension up in the main story has been to get people invested into NPCs who aren't sold, so there is the threat something could happen to them (Repti convincing that mother to hand her daughter over to him so he could "reeducate" her, people dying in the current war against the Otherworlders, etc).
I've tried out a few other gacha games, but I just do not like them anywhere near as much. Don't like their aesthetics, music, writing, gameplay, overly grindy gameplay, etc.

I bought King of Dragon Pass back when I was playing it. It works really well on Android and I would seriously recommend it. Otherwise, no.Trickster wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 00:52So, do you, guys, play one of these games? Answer honestly. No one will judge.

I don't really get it, tbh. Killing a character in a story can be super powerful and leave a lasting impact on us. It can make the character unforgettable. And if you think hard, there are ways to keep a dead character playable anyway, it just takes some creativity to come up with a lore reason for it.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 01:15It is not in a gacha game's financial interest to kill off a playable character that they have sold and people are invested in. I think it is because other gachas which lean heavily into selling people waifus and husbandos (GBF has some fanservice and shipteasing of gacha characters with the MC, but nowhere to the same extent as a usual gacha game like Kantai Collection, Touken Ranbu, FGO, Girl's Frontline, Honkai Star Rail, etc). People don't want to be told that the waifu they put a marriage ring on is dead and won't get any more appearances.Trickster wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 01:44I don't really get it, tbh. No. The games have fallen after hardware acceleration of 3D graphic was invented.Zothique wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 05:53Phone games are slop and were the true start of the decline in gaming, not ******/******/****** ****. I never see anyone talk about this.

And I doubt they'll do something like that again. Especially considering what their fanbase has become after Genshin.
This wasn't a problem since the Herrshers are like different persona of each character, they kept releasing new versions of Himeko after her death. But the fact that such an important character died in the story was really great, very emotionally impactful (and I wasn't expecting it, honestly).Trickster wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 06:16And I doubt they'll do something like that again. If you're looking for a good phone RPG, try Exiled Kingdoms. No ********, just buy the game, no ads.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... l&hl=en_US
It's also available on PC, but it was mobile first(AFAIK)
For mobile ports, there's ATOM RPG

Ironically mobile phone games offer a better experience than consoles and PC right now. Mobile phone games 'just werk' with no optimisation problems and massive storage requirements. You'll never see a Monster Hunter Wilds or Star Wars Jedi Survivor equivalent on a mobile phone. For that reason, plus ease of use, it's no wonder kids and boomers prefer it to the bigger and more expensive counterparts.

My two cents, If you're looking for a RPG for mobile device, there are plenty of ports.
OpenMW (Morrowind), Kotor is what I can remember right off the bat. There are probably more.
The Kingdom Rush series has pretty good tower defense, but stick to the first 3. The last two have started charging for more towers.

Age of Rivals is a card game that's similar to the 7 Wonders board game.

Yellow and Yangtze (Yankee Zulu can tell you more about those) is a modern version of Tigris and Euphrates - one of the all time best board games.

I have several board game conversions, Isle of Skye, Metro, many more.
Oh yeah, a guy has been working on a mobile version of the long abandoned Elements card battler game. It's still in beta. He has a web version, too.

I did once which was FGO and it wasn’t good at all. It’s just waifu bait but that can easily be said for all gacha games.Trickster wrote: ↑ November 13th, 2024, 00:52So, do you, guys, play one of these games? Answer honestly. No one will judge.
Occidental Heroes - Dev is a bit of a libtard but the game is great, turn-based low-fantasy hex tiled combat.
Gurk III - fun 80s aesthetic RPG. Highly recommended.
Unknown Knights - real-time roguelike, possibly the only real-time game that I enjoy.
Exiled Kingdoms - Rusty mentioned this already. It's fun as **** but diablo-like on a phone is clunky as hell, I've never finished it. Made by the dev of Archaelund (DavidBVal on the Codex), great guy.
Old SEGA/SE collections - Phantasy Star I-IV, Final Fantasy I-V, Shining Forces, Shining in the Darkness.
King of Dragon Pass.
Heroes of Steel and most other Trese Brothers games - decent popcorn RPGs, not very well suited to mobile imo but fun time-wasters. Devs are woke I think? So I've stopped buying their games.
Questlord - comfy first-person RPG, not deep just fun.
Lowlander - Ultima-like, also not deep just fun.
Punch Club - auto-battler. Fun, silly.
GACHAS - I've played a couple. Mostly Final Fantasies (Mobius, Dissidia Opera Omnia, Brave Exvius and Record Keeper), they're all shut down though I believe. I play a gacha TD called Watcher of Realms right now, it's fine. Don't spend money on them. Played RAID for awhile, got tired of how ridiculously focused absolutely every mechanic is on sucking money out of you. It's a shame because there's potential for a great game in there.
Silversword - Bard's Tale-like. Very fun but incredibly grindy in the end-game.
Lootbox RPG - very fun.
Crowntakers - okayish boardgame roguelike.
Talisman - absolutely fantastic boardgame. Great fun.
Elder Sign - cthulhu mythos boardgame. Also fun.
Final Fantasy Dimensions - deserves to be highlighted. Really great character development system.
Warhammer Quest - Paradox-tier DLC model, but the base game is pretty fun. Turn- and mission-based, not really an RPG. More like a battle simulator.
Dungeoneers Quest - really fun blobber. Was supposed to be expanded/sequel but never got one.
Knights of Pen&Paper - fun and silly little RPG.
Ash - decent RPG, may have been delisted from the store. Was supposed to get a sequel but the devs imploded in some kind of drama (probably ******-related idk).
Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls - very good but difficult to play on mobile.
Endless Nights - RPG by the developer of Loot Box. Fun.

Found a gacha rpg with permanent death of characters.
The only gacha game I truly stuck with for more than a day before realizing I had better games to play—either on my old PS Vita or now, was Fate/Grand Order (FGO). I got into it solely because of a synergy I saw between two characters in a video: Saint Georgios and Siegfried. Georgios’ ultimate skill marks an enemy as a dragon, while Siegfried, being a dragonslayer, deals bonus damage to dragons. The combo looked cool, but I ended up ditching Siegfried early on.
I liked Saint Georgios way more. He’s a low-rarity unit, but one of the best tanks in the game. I went all in—maxing him out with every possible upgrade system, putting him on par with some five-star units. Was it worth it? Honestly, I don’t know. All I really spent was time.
I quit FGO in 2022. My playtime had been dropping off, and I forgot to back up my account’s recovery code. When I tried to come back earlier this year, I realized the code was gone, and with it, the account. Maybe that’s for the best; there are plenty of better games to spend my time on now.
I’ve tried newer gachas, and they’re way more forgiving than FGO. The only one I might return to is Zenless Zone Zero since it’s PC-friendly. FGO, as one of the first gacha games to explode in popularity, feels archaic from its outdated rarity and battle systems to its punishing pity mechanics. Modern gachas, especially those by MiHoYo, have introduced so many quality-of-life improvements, yet FGO clings to its old design philosophies.
The worst offender by far is FGO’s account system. Instead of something simple like an email and password, it uses a recovery code. This one-time-use code must be manually created, saved, and stored somewhere, there’s no automatic backup or easy retrieval. Lose it, and your account is basically gone.
