ATOM RPG 2

Post by krokodil »

teaser trailer just dropped out of nowhere:

ATOM RPG 2 is a story-heavy tactical CRPG set in a world where the Cold War turned hot. Explore a living open world with vertical level design, tactical battles, and an interactive world map. Take part in numerous side activities: such as fishing, building, racing, and more, while expanding your influence and control over the land. Remember: your choices not only shape a resurrecting civilisation, but may also prevent a new apocalypse looming on the horizon...

Interesting, do they want to expand these mechanics? Will I be able to push my enemies out of buildings (or vice versa)?

sounds like Fallout 2->Fallout 3 type of transition. The description also mentioned racing, no idea how you can implement racing in a game like this, unless you go full real-time 3d-person with a controllable camera.

The horrors! I hope it's just expanding the interaction between floors (throwing a grenade up or down for example) and something like fall famage.

Maybe it's first GTA style racing?

Swordhaven is a flopped ****** game, tbh I'd be surprise if the ATOM team manage to release another title after that rather than just dissolve.

I feel like this one is going to flop too, given how no one wrote about it anywhere. Almost as if the devs forgot to send the presskit to the gamejournos and youtubers. They just posted this trailer on their twitter/youtube channels, wrote a short steam post, and called it a day.

No Russian language again according to Steam page. I can make a far-fetched excuse why there was no need for it in Swordhaven - new IP with no recognition. But none in an ATOM game? That's just dumb.

RPGs are fun when you have lots of various things to do, I'm not a big fan of racing but I assume some people are

there shouldn't be any language but english and whatever language the devs are native in if non-native english speakers
tired of this "add my language spoken by 7 people, 6 of which can speak english perfectly, plzzzzzzzzzzzz"

Looking forward to this one, the writing has been pretty good so far and Trudograd left me wanting to see how the railgun gambit will play out.

I think the Russians were the star devs.
There are basic bugs the current team just cannot seem to fix.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

Mostly not critical bugs.
But it's definitely not even up to ATOM RPG's level of detail and polish.
It looks nice, though. And doesn't crash.

The graphics of Swordhaven really look great... The first Atom RPG wasn't like this at all, not even close. Maybe someday the Atom team will come back and make a remaster version of it, to milk it?

Main problem with Swordhaven is they took an existing RPG system and bolted it into a setting/story. It needed a new system built around the setting/story instead.
Arcanum would have been much worse if it was just Fallout's systems

Swordhaven has fundamental bugs that I know for a fact the current devs have tried to fix and repeatedly failed to.
These were not issues with either ATOM or Trudograd, and they would have been easily visible there, too.
Therefore, critical coders are missing from the current team.
Since all the Russians are missing, I assumed it was one or more of them, but maybe some poor/dumb Ukranian got into the army.

What are the issues?
Aside from the crafting bug I explained, there are problems in their display of ordered lists, showing up both in the crafting menu and in display of dialog choices, and also inventory ordering.
They occasianally populate in a reverse or partially cycled order, where the list may be the reverse of what was previously shown from first to last, or the first may be third, for example, and the rest proceed and wrap around.
Sometimes you even get full duplications. This is usally seen in crafting, where you get two sets of the same tab.
They lessened this behavior, but it still happens from time to time. It was ALL the time for a majority of the beta.
There is no good reason for coding to allow this behavior. Ordered lists are dead simple.
Somebody did something VERY weird in the initial code (the third time a version of this engine was used) that wasn't easily resolved, and it was clear they were either not interested or not capable of refactoring (fundamentally rewriting the code using a better methodology) to fix the problem.

There are other chronic bugs as well, not as immediately visible, but recurrent in the bug reports. At least one breaks saves.

That's pretty bad. How often does this happen?
Sad to hear that the technical state is lacking, ATOM RPG was pretty solid in this regard. I only encountered one minor bug with disappearing portraits there.

Fortunately, very rare.
And I forget exactly what, but it's something to do with events in a late-game area.

And of course, the main char from ATOM \ TG will feature in ATOM 2. But not as a playable character. We miiiight even make a limited save compatibility function that will influence this NPC based on the choices you made back when they were a PC. Like if you played as a female cannibal major, this will be reflected in the Major's character in ATOM 2. Though this is still being decided upon, no promises, as it's pretty costly to pull off :)
but the area will be different geographically, and your character will not be involved with ATOM at first. They will in fact be a fish out of water, learning about the world, ATOM, and other factions and events along with the player. The main character from ATOM and Trudograd will be an NPC, or at least an invisible manipulator behind important story events.
A new character then. Interesting what will they do with the save transfer.
We're playing with the idea of a whole new class of anomalous items you can use to improve yourself, not just catch radiation sickness :D

Meanwhile, still just getting Swordhaven to a finished state:
Image

I haven't checked to see if the critical crafting bug I pointed out last year two major patches ago is still there.
I'm betting it is. Will update when I test tomorrow.

Anyway, they have no business starting on a new game with the last one still at 80% done or so.
