Definitely a hood. You can pull it down and carry a cat or some other familiar inside it without using your hands.

I wear a pointy hat and a hood. That way, if it starts raining, you can put your hood up so it doesn't ruin your hat.

Insufficient. It's just like how the robe is still just a robe, even when worn by a wizard. You put on your robe and wizard hat. It's the hat which is a wizard hat. The robe is just a robe, it doesn't become a wizard robe on its own just by virtue of association. Meanwhile, it is still a wizard hat even when the wearer is not a wizard.

Yeah, even in the OP's first image, the ony way you know that the guy is a wizard is because he's got the Epic Wizard Beard. Take away his epic wizard beard, and suddenly you have no idea who that guy is supposed to be.

Meanwhile, a guy with a wizard hat doesn't necessarily need an epic wizard beard to be identifiable as a wizard. Because he's got a wizard hat, not some generic hood.

ooh this is a tough one.

Pointy hat just screams Wizard, and looks great in ceremonious or peaceful situations. More of a fashion item.
For adventuring though, I'd be taking the hood.

The hat will keep you cooler in the sun and drier in the rain because of its wide brim.
