Stop naming games after other games

"Oh it's a rougelike metroidvania soulslike with Diablo elements harkening back to the good old days of Doom and Quake, with CYOAB segments remensicent of Beavis and Butthead in Virtual Stupidity if it was a Nintendo 64 platformer running on the infinity engine, and also a wizardry clone."

"Action-adventure" is one of those terms we just pretend means something, like "content" or "vibe".

There is no fictional game, nigga. It's a parody of steam blurbs and how devs can't concieve of games with more of a vision than mashing a bunch of other games together.

"How would you have felt if you didn't have breakfast yesterday?"
"But I did have breakfast yesterday."
And I thought the notion of Slavs being the niggers of Europe to be dumb. It seems like I was mistaken.

Ok, you want an example? Dead Cells. You can't describe dead cells without frankensteining together a bunch of other game titles. The real question isn't what do we call Dead Cells to dance around how it adds nothing to the table. The real question is why couldn't Dead Cells add something to the table, so we'd have no problem to dance around.

Want a favourable alternative? Underrail and KCD. Even if they picked up things from older RPGs, but you can't describe them without addressing the setting or game mechanics directly. They add something to the table.

Want another one? ATOM. It's a fallout ripoff but despite that it has something to it that makes it worth playing even next to Fallout. It's like what Blood did to Duke Nukem. The bones are derivative but the meat is original. If you had Fictional Game X whose vision was Duke Nukem meets Dark Souls - and you played both Duke Nukem and Dark Souls - the Fictional Game X would hold absolutely no value.

I am not sure the issue? I mean, I understand the complaint about "genre" classifications as they have been urinating on them for decades (ie its an action/adventure/strategy/sim game! What?). I think the reference to a previous game has become the means to which most try to communicate the "style and type" of game play that is to be expected. I wish there was a better attempt at organizing a more structured system to properly communicate game genres and sub styles, but is it really a surprise when even dictionaries are confusing definitions?

As soon as they started pushing relativism as the standard, structured process and organization were the first on the chopping block. Society at its current state lacks the intellectual ability to achieve such organization.

How is comparing a new game in a style to one everyone knows already that clearly influenced it a bad thing? Oh wow its a game where you have combat that is about rolling and dodging attacks while you wait for your turn to hit the enemy and and also you are exploring a semi-linear map with many shortcuts to the respawn and progression system that's a physical location in each area where you can rest to recover health and resources while respawning the enemies you killed that life as a tradeoff and the game has cryptic lore that is more or less unfinished and also and also; or you just call it a souls-like so people understand that its like dark souls.
You're a nigger-like.
This thread is a reddit-like.
