[Kenshi] Textures: Realism, versus Fidelity

Post by TKVNC »

So, as ever, I am having a crisis of confidence when making something.

I appreciate to some people this is barely something worth thinking about, but I'm sure you all understand if things don't look 'correct', it makes everything else feel 'off' by association.

Left is the larger version of the texture, Right is the smaller version of the texture, realistically, I have concluded that Left is -approximately- 1 inch rings, and the right, is therefore 5-6/8s Inch rings.

The problem is... Real life does not suffer from pixels, games however do. Realistically speaking, I should make them 2-3/8s Inch, roughly half the size they are now; but already even reduced by 2-3/8s they are much less clear.

The question is... Do I aim for Visual Fidelity (and therefore go with the 1 inch rings (Left), or do I try to appeal to Realism, and make it potentailly a blurry mess?

My knee-jerk reaction would be realism at all times but since you won't be getting a perfect result here anyway I suggest going for a middle ground option.

Focus on how chainmail looks from far away. The contrast in values, the way it glints & reflects light.

The important things are:

A) Does it clearly communicated to the player what it needs to communicate?

B) Does it fit in with the rest of the game's art style?

As long as you check both of those boxes it doesn't matter, just pick whatever you think looks best.
You cannot reason a person out of a position he did not reason himself into in the first place.

Some updates, finally got around to making Icons.

Rest of it is all but finished.

Ivory Scabbards from the other mod, more stuff that's finished, just need to clean it up.
