World of Warcraft: Retail, Classic and Private
Max's face was priceless. There must be so much adrenaline and emotion, thinking that after 300 pulls you have finally won the race, panic when you're dead and wondering what's goin on, and then pleasant surprise discovering that there is a new final form, and then anxiety knowing you'll have to keep reliably pushing on to get there and beat that too. Seems to have been pretty demoralizing given how Liquid's prog success diminished after this, but they were exhausted and had to go to bed and rest.

There was actually a secret phase of the final raid boss? Have they ever done that before?? Mythic exclusive phases started becoming a thing during MoP (some earlier fights like Halion at the end of WotLK had them). Sha of Anger took you into the middle of the ocean with the huge Sha submerging like a deep sea monster and emerging underneath you. Throne of Thunder had Ra-den who was a heroic exclusive true final boss of the raid. Garrosh took you into a vision/alternate future where he razed Orgrimmar and the faction leaders are impaled on spikes. Mythic Imperator had Cho'gall jump into the fight and become the true last boss. Mythic Archimonde had you go to the Twisting Nether and kill him for real. Etc. But most of these were known via PTR or datamining beforehand.methoxetamine wrote: β April 6th, 2026, 17:58There was actually a secret phase of the final raid boss? Have they ever done that before?? The last really secret mythic phases I can recall off of the top of my head were 1. Sylvanas at the end of Sanctum of Domination in 9.1. Normally, you are fighting Sylvanas, and then chasing her across the giant chains as she flees to Oribos to steal the Arbiter's power for the Jailer. The fight ends when you DPS her down to 50% HP and you get a cutscene of Sylvanas succeeding. On Mythic difficulty, the fight does not end at 50% HP and the RWF raiders panicked when they saw that she was dipping below that.
And 2. the Jailer at the end of Sepulcher of the First Ones, where at 10% HP he begins casting Death Sentence on players that kills them after 30 seconds and spreads multiplicatively to other players.

Well the last chapter of the story is currently broken. Logging into Silvermoon, it is phased back into the Darkwell, and the next main story quest tells you to do the March on Quel'danas raid... which I had already done last week which resulted in the elimination of the Darkwell. Gotta do last week's story chapter and raid all over again! Geez thanks Blizz!
Okay so after redoing the work I already did, we get to the new story chapter. Umbric gets reinstated as Magister and Rommath unlocks his office, though it's just one room as opposed to the offices of those two sidequest Magisters I saw with the warded doorways, which is disappointing.

Vereesa declares the end of the Silver Covenant "because we were founded to fight the Horde and there is no need anymore and we must let go of our hatred and move on". Uh huh. Strangely, Lor'themar insists that I need to be there as an important witness to the contract being signed, but there is no crowd there for the signing. It's just Vereesa and Aethas in the corner of a room signing it, so I guess this was not a big deal.

Emerging from the signing room, guess what? The Darkwell and the Voidstorm is back baby! Lor'themar sends us over there for final preparations to cleanse what remains of the Darkwell, which is rather difficult when I am in the old Darkwell phase and there are mobs everywhere that burst you down in two seconds. Had to do a couple corpse rushes, respawning, clicking the questgiver to turn in a quest and accepting the next one right before I died.

On the Isle of Quel'danas, Shandris says she's here to make sure that the Blood Elves let go of their magic well. So she has brought magical Moonwell water to pour into the Sun/Darkwell/whatever hole. That sounds she is going to change the elemental leaning of the magic well, not getting rid of it.
Next, we get a quest to go into the Sunwell chamber. Unfortunately, because this is bugged to the Darkwell phase, entering the chmaber causes instant death, and there is the final raid boss standing right behind the questgivers so you'd probably be two shotted before you could finish turning the quest in anyway.

10/10 Blizzard quality

FF14 releases patches without major bugs breaking the story or the world, but Blizzard can't? FF14 doesn't need to use their paying ($50 box purchase + $15 per month sub) customers as unpaid QA testers via PTR either. Goodness.
The phasing was fixed. There was only 10 minutes left of the story. The different elf races throw in some magical artifacts into the Darkwell to purify it and remake it into the Dawnwell, which is apparently a mixture of different magics rather than just being arcane and Light.

Otherwise, that's it. That's the end of the base Midnight story.
The big battle (before the last raid) and the epilogue was underwhelming. The battle for Quel'danas at the start of the expansion felt more desperate and grandiose than the one at the end with all of the jellyfish and dragons flying overhead, and the reinforcement armies you call in are pretty pitiful when it amounts to 3 ents, a half dozen Nightborne constructs, a dozen dragonriders, two warships, and 50 guys. The epilogue dissolution of the Silver Covenant and reintegration of the high elves into Quel'thelas happens in the span of two minutes with no crowds or anything.

A lot of bad writing aside, the storytelling experience has mildly improved over prior expansions.
You get a cast of characters and a deuteragonist to follow through most of the zones/chapters, rather than the usual WoW expansion formula where each chapter or zone is about a different hero or cast and their problems are all unrelated arcs. Well that happens here but only in Zul'Aman and Harandar, as opposed to the Quel'danas intro, Eversong Woods, Arator's Journey, the Voidstorm, and the level cap questline all featuring Arator and co.
Midnight also shifted away from the usual WoW expac formula of the base launch experience ending with the story unresolved as you kill a minor lieutenant (or worst, a completely unrelated side monsters) while the big bad that the story is about is still at large. And then you unsub and wait 18 months for the last patch to come out (which is only a few hours long) and you finally beat the big bad... long after the build up and the steam and the tension had worn off. Midnight instead is patterned after FF14 or GW2 or a traditional box RPG where you get a (mostly) complete story in the base launch. The story starts with Quel'danas being invaded, and then by the end of this questline you have repelled the invasion and saved Quel'danas. I guess Xal'atath is still at large, but she strangely had very little presence or focus here. And Alleria and Turalyon vanished through the Darkwell and nobody has commented on that, not even their son...
There are a lot more in-engine cutscenes than usual, but it's still not enough to effectively convey the characters and their nuances better. The quality is still inconsistent, and for some reason the devs are preoccupied with using the in-engine cutscenes to focus on NPCs rather than the customizeable player character who you play as for 99.99999% of the time. These could have just been pre-rendered.
We are now over halfway through the Worldsoul Saga at 10 zones with maybe 16 more left (2 patch zones in Midnight, and the TLT story might conclude in the base expansion launch like with Midnight, so the WSS might wrap up in the 4 TLT launch zones. If it doesn't, then we have 2 more zones after that for a max of 18). So far, this has not been the FF14 level leap in storytelling quality that Metzen promised it would be at Blizzcon 2023. You can sometimes tell that some of the devs are really trying, but the whole team/company is not committing and going all in on what is required to make it a holistically better experience.

Well you have to admit, there could've been the possibility of it happening. Just look at the Darkspear Pride Event.
