XBOX home console's lifespan

Post by Valter »

For the better part of a year now, I've been under the impression that XBOX, as a console, is far far behind Playstation and the Nintendo Switch in terms of popularity. I fully expect the next generation XBOX to be their last.
But lo and behold feeble unbeliever, it seems Microsoft is so confident they're even diving into the handheld market now!
"Xbox's new hardware plans begin with a gaming handheld set for later this year, with full next-gen consoles targeting 2027"

It seems my conclusions were way off the mark. As of right now, I'd interpret this as a consequence of the success they've witnessed in Game Pass and the Steam Deck, driving Microsoft to fully commit to the more casual consumer.
But are they completely calm, in control and know the market like the palm of their hand, or is there desperation behind this move as they try to reach as big an audience as possible before the console dies out?
Will the handheld follow Nintendo and Steam's success, or Sony's failure?
What will the outcome be? :read:

Chudbox.

Anyways, Microsoft will continue regardless of how profitable it is because they have infinite money.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

This is news to me
Still, were their plans to fall through, no one likes a failed product on their portfolio.

Are you aware of the many, many failed products in Microsoft's portfolio?

I can't believe Windows is ******* dead :rip: (I don't know what you're referring to)
I must admit that I can't come up with the last time Microsoft ditched a product without having an immediate replacement for it. (MSN -> Skype -> Teams for example)

So at what point do they go and say "This is not worth it anymore"? Do they just have an unreasonably low bar for this decision? ...Do they just not care?

Windows consumer(home) OS probably makes no profit on its own.

Microsoft has hundreds of products, many of which you likely aren't aware of unless you work in a particular job.

I don't see it becoming popular. Xbox does not have games people want to play like Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Donkey Kong, etc. And Steam Deck has already snatched up whatever interest there is in playing non Nintendo/PC games on handheld.
