99% of games I played work fine, the rule is if a game has been released for the PS4 then it'll probably work fine on your steam deck.

Just played A Link to the Past + A Link Between Worlds on emulators. ALBW took a little configuring to get running smoothly.

The green checkmark is almost always correct.

The yellow checkmark is all over the place as is 'Unsupported'.

My recommendation: look for Full Controller Support. No Full Controller Support = game is bad.
There are exception to even this, because Valve sometimes hands the Full Controller Support to games that don't even have any.

But Verified + Full Controller Support gives 99% chance of good UX on the deck.

All of the checkmarks work just fine, ignore them and try it out yourself (if it doesn't work just refund) for example the new GTA V Enhanced Edition (Unsupported) works just fine out of the box with any one of the Raytracing effects enabled at 30 fps on the Steam Deck, seriously impressive for the power of the device.

can't remember the last game I tried to play that didn't work using proton
guess steamdeck is a bit different as you need decent controller support too

Don't need it, some games work just fine just need a community preset or make one yourself. I played a full game of civ5 just fine the other day.

Don't need it, some games work just fine just need a community preset or make one yourself. I played a full game of civ5 just fine the other day.

TBS = good
RTS = bad

It highly depends on the type of game.
For example, all platformers work well on the deck. MMOs are generally forgettable with the noteworthy exceptions of ESO and DDO. Shooters just nope.
If the game is also available on console it is a strong indicator it will work well on the deck as well.

I personally use this website and completely ignore the Steam Deck Rating that store pages have because they don't seem to be accurate at all. Besides checking compatibility, ProtonDB has also helped me fix any games that need a bit of finagling to launch. It can also be used for any Linux system in general not just Steam Deck. It's a lifesaver!

Any issues I've had on linux were fixed by using proton-ge, but I don't know how difficult(if at all) it is to install it on the steamduck.

It's relatively simple to install Proton-GE on Steam Deck. You first have to go to Desktop Mode, click the Discover app store (the one in the taskbar or start menu), then search and install an app named "ProtonUp Qt". It is an app that automatically installs and updates to new Proton GE versions. If you don't want to go to Desktop Mode each time to install different versions of Proton-GE, you can add ProtonUp as a non-steam application for convenient access in Gaming Mode.

Steam Deck really does a good job at making Linux more palatable for the everyday person. The consistent stableness and compatibility of the OS + drivers certainly helps as well.
