Black and white UI in games. Yes or No?

Post by Yankee Zulu »

I think maybe Skyrim started this? Old **** should know better. Phoenix Point, Bellwright (with some blue), ELEX, and others I can't remember.

I didn't understand the question so I interpret it as "do you like those homosexual mobile minimal UIs?" and voted no

Only seen it done well a couple times where it's actually appropriate e.g., Endless Space 2

No, thank you. I prefer soulful UI like:
First picture is unfortunately small since I couldn't find a better one.

It is a -strong- depend. Since UI is very subjective, and a lot of games have different UI.

Generally, I would say - No; the exception is where it is 'minimalist' where it permits easier use.

Kenshi's UI is peak. It's neither Black, nor White, nor Minimalist.

Minimalist UI is tolerably functional, but it doesn't do it for me. I want UI that looks like it belongs in the setting. If it's fantasy, it should look like it's on scrolls or stone. If it's sci-fi, there should be dials, computer screens, and blinking lights. Whatever is setting appropriate. It needs character because I'll be looking at it for hours.

There should be shape, texture and color symmetry even in a minimalist approach. So it depends on the game, setting, art style, etc...

It depends entirely on the rest of the visual presentation.
