[WIP] Avatar packs

Post by rusty_shackleford »

We have gallery avatar support. I poked around for a bit and only added one game's Avatar's(Ambermoon.) The avatars are currently 120x128, but I'll probably fix them so that they're 128x128, centered with 4px transparent. I suppose that will standardize us on a 128x128 avatar.
Image

Therefore, if you'd like to share avatars for newfriends and other users to easily access, you can provide it to me in zip(or similar) form. Either directly inside the archive, or under a directory with the game's name. The avatars should be 128x128 using transparent padding to center them.

Handy command to do this with imagemagick.

Code: Select all

mogrify \
  -resize 128x128 \
  -background transparent \
  -gravity center \
  -extent 128x128 \
  *.{png,jpg,jpeg}
This assumes you already have a folder of images and will overwrite them. Make sure to back up the folder.

May I suggest allowing non-square avatars too? the majority of character artwork in games is in portrait mode, and trying to fit them into square pics often results in an awkward fit. I want to upload an AI-improved gallery -courtesy of one nexus modder- of BG2EE portraits but I don't like how they look in cropped square format, and setting the height to 128px makes them look too small. I believe a dimension of 128x200 is a good limit.

Take this as an example of how it would look:

I recall there being an issue at some height or width for portraits near 120x120 but I didn't document it, I'll look into it. and see if it's actually an issue. If not I'm fine with increasing the height.

I'd actually prefer to just have square avatars, it makes everything look more uniform. Also the longer avatars make the body of short posts more tall, wasting space and lengthening the time you need to scroll to get past them, and I think the empty space just looks bad.

Added.

Avatar sizing has been adjusted.
I need to expose the avatar dimensions to the stylesheet, until then larger avatars are just gonna look a bit weird.

No. 120 is enough. Games stopped looking good 20 years ago.

Think of all the people still using 800 x 600 screens.

Now I don't want to join the iDogPileWarRand% and take a swing at you, @Vergil, but I just saw the Termina portraits above and thought to myself:

Hey, Image looks like a faggot.

I mean, they all look like characters from a children's book drawn by a satanic canaanite, but the only one that looks like a faggot is that one. Maybe it's the angular face or the long hair while wearing a visor cap, I don't know exactly.

For me it's the psychopath sanpaku eyes that give off the faggot vibe.

Hero's Adventure avatar pack added to the gallery. I don't know if it's every avatar, but I think it's close at least. I like about 80% of the avatars, some of the female avatars look too 'chibi'/'moe' and out of place, imo

(I can't remember if there's an issue with non-square avatars or not, if there is then I guess I'll add transparent padding, but there shouldn't be…)

Very cozy looking avatars, anyone who prefers the animango DLC avatars is a weirdo

@rusty_shackleford, should I still add padding to make all the images 128x128? Some of the existing avatar packs don't appear to have padding. Is that just a quirk of how they're displayed on the avatar picker page?
