Marvel's Midnight Suns is surprisingly... good?

For discussing tactical and strategy games. What's the difference between tactics and strategy anyways?

Marvel's Midnight Suns is surprisingly... good?

Post by rusty_shackleford »

Anyone else play this?
Decent combat, good difficulty, team interactions in-between combat along with the adventure parts are pretty good.

I honestly don't know shit about Marvel so beyond basic superheroes like Spiderman or Blade, I don't even know who most of these people are. Never watched any of the Marvel movies either, so I don't think that's required to understand any of it.

I like the concept of cards in the role they fill in these games, but I hate the way games express them. But I can't really think of any way to do it other than cards. Being able to manage being dealt a bad hand, or properly picking your abilities, is kinda fun.

Surprisingly also rather pozz-free too. I expected it to be insufferable, but it's... not?

Oh yeah, and it's a UE5 game that actually has good performance. Really good. I never get FPS dips anywhere at max quality(1440p) and it looks good.

I just watched the story on Youtube since the actual game looked pretty boring.

Checking the logs, it's actually UE4.26.
UE5 is essentially just a version bump of UE4 anyways, so, it's not that big. I suspect that nanite/lumen is actually really crap and responsible for a lot of the UE5 garbage.

Played it and enjoyed it. Was worth the less than $30 I paid for it. I wish the DLC would go on deep sale because it would be a good excuse to play through it again, but it doesn't add much content.

Maybe not the writing but they made Nico incredibly ugly.

All you need is a mod to change her hair style and remove the piercings and she becomes very hot. That what I did.

Actually forgot my version had the dlc, it just didn't activate. Noticed I was getting a browser launcher error when I launched the game, it was to ask for permissions which connects the game to your account. :groan:

Also, I really hate deadpool.

Another episode of "Rusty is praising some shitty mainstream game" as something underrated.

I remember someone on another forum was constantly shilling this, and everything that person posted looked like utter shit.

Hard pass.

Come back when the game is on GOG.

I'd love to try it but it's not gonna happen.

How many people shitting on this have actually played it? Everyone who's played it ends up saying it's surprisingly good. The only reason it looks like shit is because cards and bad marketing.

There are no sexy female outfits in the game. Designs obviously went through the standard modern censors. Breast reductions and manly faces for everyone.

Most enjoyable part of the game was probably using Spiderman to win via environmental attacks.

One of my favorite things in games has to be when a dev actually cares enough to have NPCs comment on what's going on. Hearing your team mates comment on the last mission or other things you've done back at your base is nice.

Interesting, Deadpool makes direct reference to a sequel in one of his fourth wall breaking statements.
Deadpool was DLC which means by the time it released they would have known whether a sequel would be made or not(I assume), so I guess this sold better than I thought.

This game was on a huge discount three months after release and did so poorly that people were fired over it. I wouldn't read anything into stuff a lolrandom character like Deadpool says.

Seems like the overlap between people who play video games and people who like marvel crap is pretty small.

Also, it's amusing that Wolverine's height is never depicted properly. He'd look incredibly goofy in basically any appearance at 5'3.

I think it's more that Marvel fans don't like turn based games or games with cards

Avengers & Guardians of the Galaxy also flopped. Only one that didn't was the Spiderman game, which has little to do with Marvel and more to do with Spiderman being a brand on the same tier as say, Superman.

Avengers was a god awful gaas and Guardians looked very repetitive and had unappealing knock-off character designs that weren't quite comic or movie-accurate.

Been increasing the difficulty every time it asks, it's actually quite hard. I have a feeling most people were not playing on the hardest difficulty, because I spend a good bit of time planning out my turns to not get my ass kicked.

If it is Marvel I want Ultimate Alliance or nothing at all. Better yet a DC version of that.

I really liked the combat system of the game, and the card system (and its upgrades) worked much better than I expected, and the game was actually challenging at times indeed. However, there was way too much "downtime" between battles. I installed a few mods that reduced the tedium, but even like that, it felt like the playthrough was 50% busywork.
Also, it was a bit weird to be able to grind forever. I ended up rushing to the endgame because it felt pointless to do all these endless side missions (with level scaled opponents).
That said, I would still recommend the game, but I think revamping the base layer would have helped the game a lot (not sure it would have changed much regarding sales, though).

I've been replaying this since the season pass is on sale for $20. That's probably the cheapest it'll go down to. It really is a pretty good game, but it just makes me long for my dream X-Men RPG that I've wanted since I was a kid. X-Men is the perfect franchise to make a great action RPG or even turn based RPG with a ton of buildporn.

I looked at it, but I don't care about most of those characters. Daredevil would have been nice, then I would just play with DD/Spiderman/Blade.

Marvel wants to push their new characters, but they don't understand that the way to introduce them is to leave something to the imagination. They need to be mysterious side guests until people ask for more instead of forcing them as the main character.
