I strongly doubt Larian licensed the code to them to be used for a separate game.Nemesis wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2024, 18:25How much of the engine and codebase does Larian or WOTC get to keep? Will the new studio need to create BG4 completely from scratch?

Did you know that the guy who created the SCS mod for BG2 (David W) is a highly respected theoretical physicist?
According to him, the reason why he doesn't use his full name is just so that his academic work comes up when people search for him.
He received his education at Oxford and he's now at the University of Pittsburg.

Bioware has been unable to release games. Their release output slowed to a crawl in the 2010s, and it has been... how many years since Anthem? How many years since their last singleplayer game, Mass Effect Andromeda?

Technically Andromeda wasn't even "Bioware", it was just a studio with the Bioware brand.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2024, 03:25Bioware has been unable to release games. I think the most condescending, tediuous, and dull Jap game has to be Zelda: Skyward Sword. One of the worst "games" I have ever played. Not only is it a chore to play, but the game actively insults you by stating 99% of what you're doing is just a "trial". Whoops, you can't progress because you have to beat this "trial", but you can't get to 'that' "trial" until you beat this "trial" first!. Coupled with the game's Sesame Street enemy design and you have a recipe for disaster.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2024, 03:10quest design in modern japanese games:

It's not only the worst Zeruda game, but one of the worst games ever made period.
Now that's some respectable profile.Acrux wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2024, 03:06Did you know that the guy who created the SCS mod for BG2 (David W) is a highly respected theoretical physicist?

The engine is divinity, Larian's property. They might be willing to license it but who knows. A BG4 game, in comparable or bigger scale of BG3, building an engine by scratch would be an almost impossible mission for sure.Nemesis wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2024, 18:25How much of the engine and codebase does Larian or WOTC get to keep? BG3 being a gay homobearsex game is a result of Swen being so inspired by the Ultima games.

I miss when developers were constantly trying to show off what their engine could do, especially when it came to physics. Average early 00s game let you interact with anything.
Now you're lucky if a game has anything beyond basic physics let alone doors you can blow up.
Can't tell if it's incompetence or because the people making games are just storyfags who never experimented and therefore never noticed all the cool things you could do in older games.

It'll be interesting to watch WOTC promote a fourth game that is likely a shell, technologically wise, of the third game.Anon wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2024, 04:17The engine is divinity, Larian's property. At least it can't be like VTMB2, where the developer is gonna deliver a game way inferior to a buggy mess made 20 fucking years agoNemesis wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2024, 16:05It'll be interesting to watch WOTC promote a fourth game that is likely a shell, technologically wise, of the third game.Anon wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2024, 04:17The engine is divinity, Larian's property. It's rather amazing how little 'filler content' longer games used to have, especially given how quickly they were developed. How much 'filler content' can you think of when you think of BG2?

Sony patents a new technology that could enable an 'auto-play' mode in PlayStation games, potentially allowing players to skip some gameplay segments.
- Sony's new patent for an AI-powered system could revolutionize gaming by allowing players to skip repetitive or grindy gameplay sections.
- The Auto-Play Mode technology uses an AI model to simulate gameplay styles and could be implemented in Sony's PlayStation games.
- While potentially controversial, this system could benefit players who struggle with lengthy games and grinding, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Great. Can't wait for the day I turn on my console, grab a beer, and watch the game play itself.Segata Sanshiro wrote: ↑ April 22nd, 2024, 14:50Journalists, rejoice!

The Uncharted series uses luck instead of health, the idea being that incoming fire is just barely missing or grazing you until Drake's luck runs out. I dig it.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 22nd, 2024, 23:44yesOyster Sauce wrote: ↑ April 22nd, 2024, 23:42So my guy really got shot 10000 times over the course of a campaign?rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 22nd, 2024, 23:42gameplay=canon

There was a Brazilian RPG system inspired by D&D that had something like that it was called "heroic points" instead of "hit points". The idea is that the heroes were just escaping deadly blows thanks to "plot armor", measured by their heroism. It was cool.Oyster Sauce wrote: ↑ April 23rd, 2024, 00:00The Uncharted series uses luck instead of health, the idea being that incoming fire is just barely missing or grazing you until Drake's luck runs out.
