reminder that the game is unfinished, ends abruptly, half the city is missing, entire zones are missing, ending is completely railroaded, and a ton of content they showcased weeks before launch never got added and won't be added

Which is why I'll only replay the game in 5-10 years, when hopefully there is a proper Content Restoration/Unfinished Business 3 mod or new campaigns released. These new subclasses are not enough for me to replay the same content all over again.

Retroactively lowering my score to 7/10 because I gave it a higher score due to assuming they'd release another definitive edition like Divinity 2, DOS1, and DOS2 that finishes the game. IIRC I mentioned in my score that you should wait to play it until that released, and well…

Yeah, looks like 12 subclasses will be added soon, one for each of the 12 classes. That's exciting and unexpected new content.

I was informed by a little birdy that Baudelaire Welch, the 'senior narrative designer'(wrote the romances & re-wrote the main story mid-development) was let go back in August. She joined Larian in 2022.

"Why did it make such an impact on people?" Welch went on to say in their talk. "This is what it meant to me when I was involved in Baldur's Gate 3. This scene feels like a watershed moment in game history where the fanfiction community feels like they're not a subculture but are the majority audience being catered to in a scene and in the game as a whole.

"In order to reach out to that part of the community, Larian gave them an incredibly silly sequence that takes an identity moniker from the gay community - literally the gay bear becomes the bear (if no one has actually made the connection before) - and that is giving players something that feels like it's from the tradition of fanfic, or just something from your Discord shit-posting hole, and presenting it as a mainstream feature. And that feels like all the time you spent joking with your friends is validated. And how many games of this kind of scale have made you feel that way before?"

Welch's Develop presentation talked a lot about the importance of fanfiction for games. "Romance is one of the longest-tail parts of a fandom you can create," Welch said. "People will write about a good romance in fanfiction for years to come." It's the sort of discussion that sustains a game's community for a very long time - far longer than the main storylines themselves. The fanfiction community also appeals to female and LGBTQIA+ players in particular, Welch said - the sort of community that's propelled the collective love-in around Baldur's Gate 3 since it launched nearly a year ago.
:yuck:
"I don't think there were specific plans for him to be a love interest," Welch told me in a follow-up interview after their talk. However, the fanfiction community surrounding the game was clear about what they wanted, and what they wanted was "daddy Halsin". Welch knew this because they themselves were a part of that community. They'd written Astarion fanfiction before applying to work at the studio, and were partially hired for their embedded knowledge about what that community wanted (they also have a game design background alongside this).
Literally hired a fujoshi fanfic writer to make the game worse, thanks, I now hate all women.

You should just accept the fact that you're gay, or go back into the closet.

That's literally why I dropped it at the start of Act 2.

Probably not gonna wait that long, but I've again run into a "why am I playing this" phase (chapter 3, chapter 1 is "yes! this game is good."; chapter 2 is "OK, but I liked chapter 1 better....") and think I will uninstall the game for now.
@rusty_shackleford /@orinEsque , am I to understand that the BG mod manager has been updated so that it works with patch 7 (and hopefully beyond)? I am still at patch 6, since I haven't played the game much since about the release of patch 7, and got the impression that it was safest to stick with patch 6 a while longer, at least if one was in the middle of a playthrough.
I just can't bear to play chapter 3. The entire BG city must be rewritten for that to happen, I am afraid... :groan:

I don't think this is true. People still discuss the plots of New Vegas, KotOR II, and probably countless other games with intriguing stories and characters that I'm forgetting, and that's wholly aside from any romance elements.
