No RPG elements? It probably goes here!

Which games/franchises have the best lore?

Post by Acrux »

Not counting things that come from an established IP like Star Wars/Trek, Starship Troopers, Warhammer 40k.

I think that Starsiege (Tribes, Earthsiege, Missionforce:Cyberstorm) is a good contender: https://starsiegecompendium.com/

Is there any point in even saying when a bunch of people are just going to come in here and say lore is stupid anyways

Aside from obvious stuff like TES or VbTM, Starsector has some of the cooler lore I've seen in a sci-fi setting. though maybe that's just because I'm a trade/logistics autist. It feels more grounded than most settings

I'm a massive sucker for lore. Probably one of the main things that can draw me into a game. I just want to get lost in a world sometimes.

My personal favourite is probably the Legacy of Kain series though there are holes and it's incomplete.
I also love the amount of lore in Fallout/TES games. I appreciate the effort they've put in for all the hidden mysteries.

I'd go with Underrail for being good post apoc scifi, and one that avoids the trappings and cliches of the genre for the most part.

Let it be known that I've read Diablo, Starcraft, Halo, and Brute Force books, as well as a novelization of Pokemon Yellow.

While it may be the presentation, I liked Serpent in the Staglands. Though not quite as comprehensive.

How do I change my username?

On a more serious note, I think Morrowind-era/early TES lore was super schizophrenic but fucking awesome. All that shit about achieving CHIM and Azura cursing the Dunmer, the entire universe being the Godhead's dream, the Dwemer's disappearance, Orcs literally being shit elves, etc etc.

I won't say it's the best though.

Alright but excluding "established IPs" would be like using some random world I wrote that only I know about as an example

I'm certain Acrux meant IP established out of videogames. So for example, Ultima (not that its lore is good) would count, but any D&D game wouldn't. :ugeek:

I got in trouble in school for reading the Halo books instead of paying attention in class.
Also holy fuck Brute Force is a deep cut.

Yes, that's correct. I mostly didn't want this flooded with Warhammer autists.

Personally, I think things like Elder Scrolls and Witcher should be excluded (both because they are well-known and because they are bad). Maybe obscure lore would be a better description.

Witcher is already excluded because it comes from a (terrible) book series first.
