I'll give this a shot after I beat Balrum, kind of reminds me of Exile after seeing the screenshots.Acrux wrote: ↑ February 26th, 2024, 18:16True! In one of the earliest posts on this forum, I said that Caves of Lore would be 2023 Game of the Year. I'm glad to be proved correct.

Going to see how difficult this will be to add:
A thread like this would benefit heavily from seeing what everyone's second favorite was.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2023, 00:09Alternative forms of voting such as ranked choice.
I think greatest rpg of all time is dragon age origins
RT would be my choice as well - I don't give a shit about bunker boy and his politics, but the game was pretty damn fantastic. That they didn't give me the choice to nudify Argenta so if I could see if the rug matches the carpet was a damn shame though.Nammu Archag wrote: ↑ February 24th, 2024, 20:34Didn't even finish Rogue Trader but I voted for it to support Putler. Hopefully there's an update that lets me bang the alien chick someday
Again, same as The Codex, no Yakuza games included. Bizarre.
7 and 8 are RPGs, the others are action-adventures.Falksi wrote: ↑ February 28th, 2024, 08:44Again, same as The Codex, no Yakuza games included. Bizarre.

Baldurs Gate 3 is the only one on the list I played for more than a few hours in 2023.
I think it had a great application of the 5e ruleset

It doesn't look like it's set to close, but I hope this poll stays open forever as a living document.

This is how you end up with bullshit "collect 500 pelts" and "kill 500 goblins" quests that waste everyones time. I'd take an excellent 20 hour game over a 100 hour game that's been padded with time killers.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 26th, 2024, 08:02So-called "games" with less than 100 hours of content are in fact paid demos.

I had actually forgotten the conversation, but some people were of the mind that a goty vote should happen for games from two years ago in order to have sufficient time to evaluate all you've cared to (though ultimately no one thought to make one for 2022). I myself have played nothing from 2023, so I believe if someone hasn't played anything or everything they want to, they can just add or even change their vote at any time in the future.Oyster Sauce wrote: ↑ February 29th, 2024, 20:07It doesn't look like it's set to close, but I hope this poll stays open forever as a living document.

I think we should do GOTY votes either in forwards or backwards order every month or something. There's no reason why they have to be topical. Woukd Disco Elysium take home the gold here?Roguey wrote: ↑ February 29th, 2024, 20:31I had actually forgotten the conversation, but some people were of the mind that a goty vote should happen for games from two years ago in order to have sufficient time to evaluate all you've cared to (though ultimately no one thought to make one for 2022). What's really happening is you will get the 20-hour game, with quests like "collect 500 pelts" and "kill 500 goblins," especially in the indie scene.Reeb wrote: ↑ February 29th, 2024, 20:30This is how you end up with bullshit "collect 500 pelts" and "kill 500 goblins" quests that waste everyones time. Compare that to BG3, which is well over 80 hours long for one playthrough, no trash encounters, and has the best quest design I've ever seen.
We used to have 50+ hour games fitting on one or two floppy disks too before; there's no such thing as games being too long.
Ah yes, as opposed to ass creed literally making you collect 500 feathers/whatever and taking forever to beat, where if you could just do the important missions the games are like 10 hours. No game is too long if it is a masterpiece but that causes less than stellar games to try to extend playtime and make the game even worse.Mortmal wrote: ↑ February 29th, 2024, 23:14What's really happening is you will get the 20-hour game, with quests like "collect 500 pelts" and "kill 500 goblins," especially in the indie scene.Reeb wrote: ↑ February 29th, 2024, 20:30This is how you end up with bullshit "collect 500 pelts" and "kill 500 goblins" quests that waste everyones time. That collectathon bullshit used to be for completionists. Then that became gameplay.
Blame Rare and then blame Ubisoft.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ February 29th, 2024, 23:30That collectathon bullshit used to be for completionists. Then that became gameplay.

Why Baldur's Gate 3?
Because generally speaking, Fantasy beats most other settings. Despite it's many flaws, it's still a pretty passable game, and with enough effort you can make it into something at least tolerable.
Naturally it's not as open-ended as a TTRPG, but if you have no friends that want to play TTRPG's, then what choice do you have?
*Edit, spelling.

Someone lolcowed and gave Forespoken 1 vote. Starfield? Still sitting at a fantastically round goose egg.
