In my book, if a dev says a game is woke, I generally go ahead and mentally mark it as woke. They're literally volunteering for the category.

Star Trek, for example, I generally consider Leftist (old Leftist, not really modern woke), since the writers were openly leftist and put in leftist concepts etc. However, the actual show was repeatedly based, usually unintentionally. But I can't deny that it was written with leftwing ideals.

But if you want gameplay evidence, well, someone who's played more of it will need to volunteer. There are some SJWish NPCs, but nothing I remember stands out. At the very least, I can't say for certain that it's non-woke because of the dev's own words.

Haven't played Caves of Quck but I think that the Templar faction is a minor faction and they aren't joinable on the game mechanics side. So Templars aren't treated in any special way. As for general 'leftist' content, hypothetically the mutant stuff may be related to queer theory or cyberpunk but I have no idea how the game handles it.

Kuro no Kiseki/Trails into Daybreak

TLDR

This is the eleventh mainline game in the Trails series, and the first game set in the Republic Calvard. Calvard was established since the first game in the series as being an expy of the United States - an aggressive, imperialist superpower that justifies its interventions in the name of "freedom", and is in a cold war with the Erebonian Empire which is a Prussia expy undergoing the German Unification by not-Bismarck. Calvard had a violent democratic revolution 100 years ago in which the old monarchy was butchered by opportunists and the world's first modern democratic republic was erected (there might be older democratic republics akin to Rome/Greece/etc from antiquity but almost nothing is none about the governments before the Great Collapse).

a. Glorification of immigration/white replacement

In the first five games of the series, Calvard is stated (by Calvardian citizens) to be suffering from a mass influx of foreigners (in the first 10 games the only immigrant race stated is "easterners" who share a generic Chinese/Japanese culture. Kuro retcons in generic Middle-Easterners migrating in too), leading to racial strife.


Ironically both of these characters are Easterners, discussing the negative consequences of immigration. Pulling up the ladder behind them.

In game #5 Ao no Kiseki/Trails to Azure, we find out that there is an organization called the Anti-Immigration League who are gaining popularity amongst the native people of Calvard, and they attempt to assassinate the incumbent President Rocksmith, only to fall into Rocksmith's trap as he was working with a powerful Eastern crime syndicate under the table.

Then you reach game #8 Trails of Cold Steel III, which is when the story begins whitewashing Calvard and presenting it as only a purely good thing. The series stops talking about the consequences of immigration, begins pretending that Calvard isn't also an aggressive expansionist empire, pretends that Calvard wasn't encroaching upon Erebonia's territory, pretends that Calvard didn't send a platoon of soldiers underneath the Imperial Capital in what could only be preparation for a preemptive strike, the bloody revolution was now an unambiguously good thing and the rebels were the good guys with no insinuation otherwise, etc.

And then here in Kuro, you have all of the heroes praising immigration, and the single anti-immigration NPC is presented as a cartoon caricature and vilified. The popular anti-immigration league is never mentioned (apparently they come back in Kuro 2 but aren't given sympathetic POVs like their Erebonian counterpart organization - the Imperial Liberation Front - got across the four Trails of Cold Steel games).






There is also a ludicrous depiction of a small village that somehow still has three distinct races (whites, easterners, and middle-easterners). In a village that small, the three races would have bred together and you would only just have one homogenous group by the present day.

The game also portrays raceswapping historical figures as a positive. In an Oscar winning film about the Joan of Arc expy who led the American/French Revolution that led to the founding of the Republic, the lead actress is portrayed by an Easterner instead of a native Calvardian woman.




In Kuro, we find out that the Eastern crime syndicate, Heiyue, controls an entire city in Calvard (Langport), with tacit approval from the Calvardian government as they do nothing to combat Heiyue. Heiyue characters are portrayed sympathetically, and the game repeatedly touts Heiyue as being "important" to preserving law and order and society as Heiyue is needed to maintain "the balance of power" in the underworld, and keep "evil" crime syndicates from rising. Meanwhile, the white mafia, Almata, is portrayed as unambiguously evil.

I could go on, but I think I've hit the main points. Kuro is a 110 hour long game so you have to put up with a lot of this.



b. Promotion of homosexual relationships

One of the NPC storylines is about a love triangle. At the climax, it is revealed that instead of the two guys both being in love with the same girl, it's actually the two guys being in love with each other (with the girl losing). You do a side quest and bring them together (which you have to do if you since Trails games have a lot of missables, and you really want to do everything to get to get the best gear and to see additional scenes, etc).



For the record, prior Trails games did have gay teases but they were presented as jokes and never actually went anywhere (Anelace's speech in Trails in the Sky SC "accidentally" coming off as a romantic confession to Estelle, Angie finding the girls to be cute and wanting to hug them in Trails of Cold Steel, horseplay where girls grab each other's boobs, etc), but this is the first Trails game that seriously endorses homosexuality.



c. Possible promotion of universalism "all Abrahamic religions actually worship the same god!"

JRPGs are infamous for organized religions usually turning out to be corrupt or a lie, and games climaxing in slaying an being that is coded as being the Abrahamic God. The Trails series was notable for the major presence of a Catholic Church expy (called the Septian Church, which worships the one true goddess Aidios) and not portraying it negatively. The Septian Church was portrayed as legitimate and as the sole practiced religion in Zemuria (we hear about how there were pagans in ancient times but paganism isn't depicted in the present day), though the heroes never pray or are convicted by their belief in the goddess and her testaments, not even the protagonist of Trails in the Sky the 3rd who is a priest.

In Kuro, a new god named "Alusha" is suddenly introduced (having never before been mentioned in this 1,000+ hour long series, not even in the prior game that came out one year before), with the religion being Islamically coded (architecture, clothing, primarily practiced by the newly introduced Middle-Easterner race, etc). However, the NPCs bear the badges of the Septian Church and use the same terminology of Father/Sister, and insist that Alusha is Aidios.





Apparently there is a mosque inside the not-Vatican city.

In the same game, the situation is also replicated with two generic Asian/Buddhist looking temples dedicated to the brand new "Heavenly Mother", who the NPCs again insist is actually just another name for Aidios.



Kuro 1 doesn't go further into this Alusha and Heavenly Mother stuff than those screenshots above. Maybe there is nothing sinister here and it's just like a Chinese Christian's depiction of Jesus, but given how the rest of the game has swerved towards promoting the usual globalist/death cult mantras, I would not be surprised if this is part of the same push. Will have to see where this goes in future games.
