Dogshit Localizations

Post by Oyster Sauce »

The goal of this thread is to showcase and raise awareness of the horrendous state of localization we've been dealing with for decades. More accurate translations will be linked whenever possible, official or otherwise.

I did do a thread a little earlier than this but that was mainly about AI and if it will take over localizations.

Do you think we should make a new thread or append this to also add lefty voice actors, YouTubers or any social media whores like Yong Yea, Sphere Hunter, ProZD that infiltrate voice acting roles? ProZD was the retard that wanted "race based" voice acting then complained about race based voice acting when he was forced to do only Asian roles.

@Oyster Sauce below is a chart of all name changes from Advance Wars 1 through Days of Ruin. A blank means unchanged or absent. Parentheses in the JP Name column contain additional information about the meaning. Note that the Orange Star faction was originally the Red Star faction and some CO Power names reference this.

I agree with the part about 'localization' being, by definition, the imposition of of the localizer's views onto a foreign work, but the author doesn't offer any useful alternative, for he also proscribes the 'outdated' idea of literal translation, leaving one to wonder how exactly he thinks translation should be done. As a staunch critic of localizers in the 'basically infertile and pointless debate', it seems obvious to me that translation should be done as literally as possible except in cases where it would be unintelligible or obscure important connotations.

As for example, ittou ryoudan (一刀両断) is a phrase with a dual meaning. On the one hand, the plain meaning of the characters is 'one sword two/both slice/decide', or to bisect with one sword stroke. On the other hand, it's a metaphor for taking decisive action. If you want the reader to be able to understand, then you have no choice but to translate it differently depending on the context, for 'bisect with one sword stroke', or just 'bisect', simply does not have the same breadth of meaning in English as it does in Japanese.

This makes me extra furious because people will defend the localization by saying 'it's better'. And you know what? Some of it does sound pretty good. "'Mankind ill needs a savior such as you!" is a great line. Probably every person who's ever played the game remembers the 'What is a man?' line. The problem is that doesn't matter. It's still a butchery. The (((localizer))) treated the dialogue as his personal canvas instead of respecting the original. It's the height of both arrogance and dishonesty to write your own prose under the title of another's work.

I never finished it, but I mostly translated Fallout Sonora from Russian to English. Sometimes, things just don't map well, especially idioms or culture-specific things.
Also doesn't help that I can't speak a word of Russian, I used multiple finetuned translation models and typically created an approximation of what sounded best.

Here's a fun question:
What is a translator supposed to do when the author made a genuine mistake and the translator can't contact the author to fix it?
For example, I know much more about the location being written than the authors themselves, and studied the Arizona Rangers which are rather integral to the story indirectly through the Desert Rangers.

I would say respect the spirit of the intent.

If the idea is to create a well written and immersive setting, specially one based on aspects of Real Life, then adherence to that should take priority.

Correcting techno-babble in a made up scifi device is different. Even if its a stretch of our undestanding of science.

But if the spirit of the intent is to make references to IRL places, eras or people, then close adherence to what those things are like IRL would be preferable, even if it goes against the original script.

My humble opinion, as always.

I think, ultimately, the quality of the translation isn't the issue (though, it is a problem), but the fact leftist localizers are malicious and motivated by spite.

16-bit translations of Japanese games weren't by no means perfect, let alone accurate, but at least Woolsey and his ilk weren't pushing any particular agenda.

And sometimes they had to employ some witchcraft.

Like how character limits worked. So, some items and names had to be changed to fit. No other way around it.

Compare to now, where the localizer deliberately butcher or ignore the actual translation just so they can peddle their propaganda.

Hilltop, the translator of Boku no Natsuyasumi 2, Aconcagua and Racing Lagoon has a few interesting videos where he details the kind of technical wizardry and out-of-the-box thinking he had to employ to translate some of the games he's worked on (Aconcagua especially).

Sometimes there's also issues with time constraints and lack of support from the Japanese branch - Final Fantasy VII's official translation is fairly shoddy because the team was under a very tight schedule to translate the game, so they cut corners.

Then again, you also have subhumans like NISA that consistently fuck things up - to the point they once released a game that would melt your PS3 under the right circumstances, all because of their incompetence. They usually even introduce bugs not present in the Japanese version of the game.

I genuinely wish death upon every NISA and Treehouse employee.

Sakura's brother is gay. But they never really make a big fuss about it.

@Oyster Sauce CO portraits for AW1 below. For each character with two different portraits, the one on the right is the JP original and the one on the left is the localized version.
► Sprite Sheet
And one more for Kikuchiyo/Kanbei, who had a different portrait for the CN version that was never released:

He shouldn't even try to contact him, not what he is being paid for. Once you do that you pretty much tell them you are OK with doing free QA on the side.
