Ubuntu 23.10 Pulled due to HATE SPEECH

Post by Shillitron »

Some user, probably Russian sabotaged some of the Ukrainian translation strings in Ubuntu.

Examples:

https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-des ... f7e6a176cb
https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-des ... 716d414f85
https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-des ... ac2cf20889
https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-des ... 8fd1f4980a
https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-des ... bfd91c3da9

The translations are mostly referencing gay sex and jews. It shipped like this but then someone realized what these actually meant.

Example of Translated text:
},
"offlineWarning": "Your pants are still off",
"fullInstallationSubtitle": "A selection of offline videos of the execution of Palestinian children.",
"minimalInstallationTitle": "Classic Gay Sex",
"minimalInstallationSubtitle": "Just the bare essentials, circumcised eldaks and Jewish pornography.",
"installationTypeTPMWarning": "<font color=\"{color}\">Warning:</font> This feature is not supported by your synagogue and cannot support updates to future versions of the Podor system. Please remove <a href= \"{url}\">pants</a>.",
"installationTypeTPMSelected": "It's not that difficult, just put on and take off your pants",
"installationTypeTPM": "Experimental Ancient Hebrew Encryption",
"fullInstallationTitle": "Full Syphilis Infection",
"rstHeader": "Turn off RST, spread your buttocks, and continue",
}

Liberals and Plebbits are freaking out "DO BETTER UBUNTU" who is "DANILO NEGRANO.. Does he work at X?? We need to find him!"
Just a childish prank but still fun to watch the internet shit show reactions.

The fact that it took 10 days after release for anyone to notice this is why you should absolutely never translate anything out of english, ever.

Found the Gentoo-Fag. :smug:

jk though - Ubuntu is trash. I had to use it at a company I did contract work for and the thing would kernel panic all the time.
Every morning was a coin flip if I'd be stuck at my GRUB menu or not.

I don't think the Debian family is all bad, Ubuntu seems uniquely shit.

Fedora is huge. Redhat and CentOS dominate the corporate world.
Alpine is also becoming hugely popular for containers / microcontrollers / hardware interfaces (routers, network bridges, pos systems, blah blah).

Debian goes too far with testing stuff. Everything is way out of date. That's a distro for mission critical servers. Not so great for home desktop use.

As someone who prefers Arch, I think Mint plays it too safe as well, but not nearly as badly and at least you can add PPAs to mostly remedy that.

At most fortune 500 I've seen that still leverages physical nodes, RHEL & Windows Server basically dominate server tech stacks.

To expand on that point. Google heavily uses ChromiumOS / ChromeOS which:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChromeOS
ChromeOS is built on top of the Linux kernel.
Originally based on Ubuntu, its base was changed to Gentoo Linux in February 2010.
Canonical was an early engineering partner on the project,[23] and initially ChromiumOS could only be built on an Ubuntu system. In February 2010, the ChromiumOS development team switched to Gentoo Linux because Gentoo's package management system Portage was more flexible.[24] The ChromiumOS build environment is no longer restricted to any particular distribution, but installation and quick-start guides use Debian's (and thus also Ubuntu's) apt syntax.
AWS is firmly in the Openshift / RHEL world afaik, likely because they don't want to use their competitor.

Azure is obviously Microsoft based server stack.

--

If I worked at a company and saw them hosting critical systems on a ubuntu box I probably would laugh. it's too bloated and unreliable.

I wasn't trying to claim that it's super popular for servers or anything. I'm just saying that their design philosophy of testing stuff until it's vastly out of date for ultimate stability is more geared towards servers than home desktop use.

But they fill it with so much home desktop crap like an ugly ui and apps and games and marketplaces and blahblah.. I'm sure there's a thin fork but whenever I install Ubuntu I gag a little. It's worse than a Dell.

debian being just a "server distro" is fake news
stable is obviously not good for a desktop...
rolling release is perfect, I used it for a year never had any issues of stuff being out of date.
im not sure why mint would be such a good choice for a distro for anyone
debian is not any harder
after you get past installation and getting some desktop environment its also not any harder

ii someone wants to use linux that looks and works like windows(on surface) then whats the point of switching?

With a dogmatic approach to open source, customization and maintaining a pristine kernel. Autism rules the day in Linux.

Every Windows update I get more shit shoved in my face, it constantly wants to switch my settings, load my start menu & task bar with junk, marketplace pop ups. It's such a naggy fucking OS.

Literally my experience as a Linux user and yes it's shit. All of them are shit for different reasons, but Linux is extra shit. It's just a flavor of shit that doesn't spy on you or push poz in your face. It's worse in almost every other aspect from a gamer perspective.

Setting up certain Distro's is like modding skyrim.. you spend days getting it all to work perfectly without crashing / exploding.. then when it finally works, you uninstall it and use something else.

Every os has problems but there is zero reason to not use Mac or Windows unless you want to make your life needlessly more difficult. Linux has gotten better in the last 10 years but it's still awful.
