In a 2011 interview with Kotaku, director Eiji Aonuma defended Navi when asked if he finds the character annoying: "Going on an adventure by yourself is lonely and dull.

Navi wasn't that annoying anyway. The "Hey, listen!" wasn't constant. Usually it was just a sound effect / tinkle.

I found the owl to be way more annoying than Navi. ******* slow unskippable text.

None of those characters are even remotely comparable to the agony the most recent Zelda games visit upon players with slow (and repetitive) (and repetitive) talky talk. I guess redditors are too stupid to notice the problem when it is spread across multiple characters.

It can work. Breath of the Wild was supposed to make you feel isolated. You were originally supposed to have some form of companion, but they scrapped it. I'm personally glad for it, it really helps making the game feel like you're in a destroyed kingdom where civilization has been pushed to the fringes.
Honestly though it makes me sad that these games manage to have more atmosphere than most modern games. ******* Zelda games that I always knew only had an excuse plot now have better and more consistent storytelling than modern day Bioware, **** my life.
