Looks like a typical mid-late 90s 3D game which is all right enough, but the PS2 generation is my minimum. N64/PSX, blech.

That just means that your character got a degree and has a diploma on hand.

Any recommendations for RPGs where you can use the same weapon for the entire game but upgrade/level it up?

Dragon Age 2, some specific weapons and armor sets, some of them DLC that is available right from the start of the game.
Witcher 3, some specific weapons and armor sets, though none available right from the start of the game.
Cyberpunk 2077 (can't confirm, apparently a recent update added this)
Mass Effect 2 and 3 weapons are all the same tier iirc, so you can viably use any of them all game
Pathfinder WoTR has that companion weapon that upgrades along his personal quest, and a single holy sword whose upgrades are also quest-related.
Update:
Elden Ring? In terms of stats you can upgrade any weapon a fuckton and make them viable to endgame, but some later weapons are clearly superior to earlier ones in terms of moveset so it doesn't feel as balanced or satisfying.

I would say Skyrim but that's just modded **** I had because I really like the concept of, with enough resources, being allowed to upgrade whatever equipment you want all the way to endgame level.

It has that 90s prerendered cutscene aesthetic.

Two Worlds. Stack multiple low-level weapons to get the weapon of mass destruction.

The enchanting mechanics of NWN2 allow you to upgrade any weapon you start with to a +5 holy-flaming-whatever else gear if you have the appropriate resources and appropriate feats.

Any Pathfinder 2 game (upgrade sockets).
Mass Effect has weapon upgrades. If the criteria is "just choose not to upgrade and can still finish the game" then this will be a very long list.

Suikoden and the Trails series. The characters' weapon visually does not change even as you go to the blacksmith to upgrade it or buy and equip a new sword. The character's weapons are not interchangeable with other characters and are unique to that character only. Ie, Viktor and Flik both use longswords, but can't equip each other's swords. Viktor can only buy Viktor's swords from the shop. Rean and Shizuna both use katanas but can only buy their own from the shop. Etc.

What if a space rpg was set in a galaxy and time progresses faster, the further zoomed out you are. You might do a boarding action on a vessel, discover an unspeakable horror from deep space, lose or escape, but now your world(s) have like 1000 years to prepare, but as you manage your galactic-scale response, time passes faster and your heroes die.

I like the idea that with cryosleep, people whose life is interstellar travel would become disconnected from planetary or orbital (space colony) civilizations. Almost everyone they knew would die in a blink their home cultures change over time and become unrecgnoizeable, nations rise snd fall, etc. So these interstellar people would become alienated, and befriend and become loyal mainly to each other. The relationship between planetary/orbital governments and interstellar travellers would become contractual, having to emplace or throw goods into space for the travellers to take once they have completed their job. See the end of Interstellar and Project Hail Mary where the protagonist has nothing left in earth and instead waltzes off to another planet to meet up with his still alive interstellar traveler friends after finishing the job and takes the spaceship (built by the eafth governments) with them as payment/their posession.
I would imagine that from the perspecgive of normal people living on planets or on space colonies, the interstellar travellers they read textbooks about or see on the news whenever they visit would seem like immortals. Government and corporate higher ups would see them as mercenary contractors.
In the context of a game, any character who disembarks would be an old man the next time we came back there and saw him. Possibly a governor or a CEO now contracting us. Or dead and we meet his grand children who might embark.

It's being made by modern game devs. The probability of it being **** is about 99.9%.

Cheap dlc made cheaper by farming it out to satellite/third party studios is likely a sign of a company in need of a cash influx.

Embarrassing. How much did Billy G pay them, I wonder?
Truthfully it's just more slop for the trough, perhaps worth buying at an 85% discount 5 years from now.

What do you mean 5 years from now? Witcher 3 is already 75% off regularly. These are (non-live service) games that already came out 11 years ago and 6 years ago getting retroactively ****** over with windows 11 requirements.
I guess I'll update my offline copy now and just not buy the expansion because I'm not touching Win 11.
It'll be hilarious if they add Denuvo to Witcher 4. Anyone taking bets on that?
