Labyrinth of Zangetsu
It looks fantastic. Nice to have a real old-fashioned dungeon crawler released.

No, that's wrong too. This is a DRPG.

Can you name a game that would be called a 'dungeon crawler' with absolutely zero dungeon crawling?
Even if a game were 30% dungeon crawling, it would be inappropriate to call it "DRPG."rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2023, 13:38Can you name a game that would be called a 'dungeon crawler' with absolutely zero dungeon crawling?

What percentage of these sorts of games consists of Wizardrying? Or blobbing? Does either meet the threshold to be used as a genre name?
A good name would reflect something fundamental about the gameplay.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2023, 13:44Is it appropriate to call a game that only has 30% shooting a "FPS"?Dead wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2023, 13:40Even if a game were 30% dungeon crawling, it would be inappropriate to call it "DRPG."rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2023, 13:38

Not a fan of the feudal Japan setting, but might give this a shot. The developers made the Tenchu games and even a Wizardry title in 2011, so they must know what they're doing.
Like moving as an amorphous blob. So, blobber. It's a blobber, not a dungeon role playing game. Almost all role playing games have dungeons in them, do we call them DRPGs? No, because that's a useless term for maladroits who sniff people's farts.
But the experience is better when you imagine that the party consists of individual party members, not an amorphous blob. Why should the genre be named after player behavior caused by their inadequate imagination?
I intentionally chose what I thought would cause the most butthurt. I'm happy to see my instincts were right.

@Acrux when are you going to give us your RPGHQ-exclusive review? I hope this whole thread wasn't just an excuse to start the genre name debate.
Sounds like a great idea! It will probably be a while before I can do that, though. Quick impression: mostly positive.

I've gotten to the 3rd map. The game is a bit on the easy side, it's really basic. It's not even as good as Stranger in Sword City IMO.
I went with warrior, monk, monk, cleric, mage, thief.

I don't know of a single game where the player moves like an amorphous blob. You should watch documentaries on the topic, e.g. "the Blob" to familiarize yourself with that kind of movement.Tweed wrote: ↑ April 21st, 2023, 15:27Like moving as an amorphous blob. So, blobber.
