Daggerfall Unity 1.0 releases, "complete"

Post by rusty_shackleford »

Just a friendly reminder that these massive corporations could just pay a couple autists to remaster their games, and it would have been done in a fraction of the time with access to the original source code.

Already did a full playthrough of this a while back. It's extremely fun and interesting. I understand why Daggerfall boomers were a little upset with the direction the series ended up taking. I can't say I've ever played something quite like Daggerfall and there's no games in the last like 20 years that fill it's niche.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

This is a fantastic game, everyone on the board should play it at least once.

Can you travel from town to town without using fast travel? You can in Arcanum and Prelude to Darkness, but I don't know about Daggerfall.

D*ggerfall is pure bloat and a terrible gaming experience. It's no use having a massive world if 95% of it is entirely flat and forgettable, and I found that aspect made everything else more confusing and not very fun to play. Later games are leaner and were more playable because of that, they knew their limitations and worked within them.

Maybe if a D*ggerfall 2 is ever made, I'll be singing a different tune. But that'd be because the technology is 30+ years newer and there is an opportunity to reallize all the heckin' cool ideas Bethesda had back then.

Yes you can. However, afaik Daggerfall map is equivalent in size to UK irl, so it would take you literally hours/days to reach anything even on horseback.

Yeah, I was never a fan of Daggerfall either. Everything randomly generated and trash except MQ (and some very fewside quests I think). Gets repetitive very quickly.

IMO TES III was the only decent game Bethesda ever released. Not great, but fun enough to run around and explore.

I've been waiting for this! Although I own a boxed copy of Daggerfall my previous experience is mostly from the demos, I could never get the actual game to run stable enough to play it. Now I just need to find the time to install it...

The demo I used to play wasn't internet downloaded shareware, instead it came on a standalone CD that packed my head full of dungeon delving dreams, only to have them crushed by the full version when travelling on the janky overworld would crash the game 9 times out of 10.

Any recommendations for mods to enhance the experience or ones that should be avoided completely?

I was happy with the prepacked features in the new engine. I think there's a lot of potential, if only the interest was there. Castle building, online guilds and wars, maybe expanding the map into other provinces.

Just making a list of neat mods I might use for future reference. No or very few 'cheats', graphical overhauls, or overhauling existing gameplay systems.

These two are from one of the main devs.
He would have liked to put some of these changes in the game, but respected the vision of making a pure remaster.

All of his:

Note: both "Roleplay and Realism" modules SHOULD be used. They are massive game enhancements with no downsides.

For example, in the base game there were three armor types: Leather, chain, and plate. But ONLY plate could have material versions.
All leather was the same from the start to the end, same with chain.
Roleplay and Realism adds the same material for chain and leather/brigantine.

I would recommend all of his five mods be used as the new default Daggerfall Unity enhanced vanilla experience.

My main critique of Daggerfall would be the complete emphasis on dungeons.

Don't play the first game, Arena, then.
Seriously.

Daggerfall was an evolution of that game.
Dungeons being the central focus was completely intentional.

But, in my opinion, not well implemented.
Still, if you don't know, development on Daggerfall was massively rushed to get it out before Bethesda went under, and it was very close.
The dungeons badly need a re-work in how they assemble, especially with regard to the sizes and layouts.

Daggerfall was an evolution of that game.
Which was probably to its detriment.

I wonder what Daggerfall would have been like if they didn't have to one-up Arena in terms of scale, scope, etc., Would there have even been an open world rather than fast travel on the map exclusively?
People wanted Arena+. There was enough time between Daggerfall & Morrowind, along with technology excuses, to get away with Morrowind being a major break from Daggerfall.

If I said it before, I apologize, but Daggerfall DOES have open world travel.

For example, when I exit the start area (Privateer's Hold) I literally run due south in the 3D worldspace to the nearest small city a couple of minutes away.
(It has a decent set of shops and a good mage's guild, as well as a couple of temples).

There's a good mod for this that does the fast travel in the world itself instead of on the map

Yes, I know.
I was the one that suggested it to him as we were discussing the implementation of roads on the map as in Arena.

A few. On the periphery.
They can be found in the Discord, but not in the forums.

I love me some daggerfall, could never get into morrowind and the later games but daggerfall it's where it's at.

Never understood why Morrowind or even skyrim was so successful and after playing daggerfall (which I did after Skyrim) I wished they had continued to expand on the game systems they had created there. The whole game could have used graphical and gameplay updates (How combat works, Dungeon layouts, greater variance in (emergent) storytelling, bigger regional differences) otherwise I would think this is a winning formula.

You could add basebuilding, poltical intrigue and wars in to the mix (maybe akin to starsector) and it would be a nearly perfect game.

The mod list is appreciated I may check some of those out.
