The reason world of warcraft isn't on Steam is probably because it has your hours played right next to the play button
I launch Steam games by left-clicking the Steam icon in the tray.

That way I don't have to worry about the fact that I have nearly 500 hours in CK2.

Cute.
Probably a significant % of WoW players pushing 50k+ hours at this point.

I wasn't trying to show off.
Also, I don't think seeing the number of hours would be enough to deter an WoW player at that point. It's like showing an alcoholic how much money he spends on booze a year.

The year is 2026. There is still no game that simulates being a member of the Enterprise crew.
Bridge Commander is pretty close but a different ship.

You don't leave the bridge. No walking around the ship, away missions, and so on.

Hope there's gonna be some kind of vetting system, otherwise steam once again is going to face a tidal wave of low quality releases.
They still have to pay the $100 admission fee.

In that case, these are probably the closest to what you are looking for. Thought they were on par with other FPS games at the time of release:

Those are pretty cool. You can go around the ship, go to the relaxation deck or whatever the **** the bar was called, go into the holodeck to play random scenarios. It's neat.

It's terrifying to see. I checked once and refused to ever look again. Knew a kid in school who had over a year invested when he was like 16/17.

My brother bought battlefield 6 on his steam account, so I wanted to try it out and the menu is an absolute catastrophy. It's just a Netflix menu, what happened to UI design in general? It took me 5 minutes just to find conquest so I can play it.
UI designers are ******* who take too much inspiration from mobile slop and IKEA.
Years ago, when the internet was still very new and UI/menu design, etc... was merely a side note, I had always thought the field would develop into extreme analytics of input control, repetition of movements and function, etc... and we would eventually end up with interfaces that were extremely practical and functional, fully designed in ways to account and augment the input tool of choice.

How stupid I was to think such things.

There are pockets of that in some areas of UX research, but the problem is that the PMs and executives who are ultimately making product decisions don't see value in long-term, fundamental research and expect prioritization in workflows and other post-hoc evaluate research (i.e. usability testing) or persona work. I hear researchers complain probably twice a week on average that there's no resourcing put towards those questions you're interested in. And I've fought with execs on why this is an important investment.

You'll mainly see it in some pockets of human factors/ergonomics, but there's a surprisingly weak pipeline between academia and industry in this field.

I have some hope, because some of the recent AI tools are pretty good for running unmodeated usability testing, which means in theory that work could be freed up for more time on creating a unified ux pattern database. They'll probably just cut most of the roles though, tbh.

"UX" is a spook, there is no such thing as "UX", just rediscovering the 1987 IBM CUA document by piecing together things that work without realizing where those things came from

Wow, I didn't realize rusty is the engineering manager I worked with 10 years ago who asked me why the whole UX team shouldn't be fired for that exact reason!

i think it's a pretty common thing, especially in the mid-to-big budget field. Every game feels like it was made by someone who's holding the genre in utter contempt.

I'm not sure I agree, I think it's more they don't care about the genre and/or are uninterested in it.

Not really.
Closest I can think of is modern Halo being developed by people that hated the original Halo.

Yeah, I strongly believe that at least two thirds of the current industry would rather be working on a Netflix TV show.

quite tired of video game stories that fetishize the lower class

can I just be a cool noble that puts down a rebellion instead of siding with them?

devs will always say things like "we wanted to put X in but didn't have enough time" but never go back and add X after making a very profitable game, instead just moving onto their next unfinished project
