I do not know enough about traditional illustration to say why, but art from the 80s/90s that was done on physical medium always looks superior to me. Digital never seems to capture the same look. Perhaps it's possible to mimic it and few people do, but…

Someone, maybe @WhiteShark, pointed out to me that all AI art seems to have a gaudy sheen that makes it look slathered in oil. I can't unsee it now.
