Post-2015 Authentic RPGs

Post by rusty_shackleford »

Webster's 1913 wrote:

What are the authentic RPGs made post-2015? Can you suggest some?

I'll start:
ATOM RPG + Trudograd

From the best of my recollection, ATOM lacks girlbosses, bear sex, extensive interracial homosexual marriages, and so forth. It is a post apocalyptic RPG set in the Soviet Union. Fun game, feels like a proper evolution of Fallout.

The standalone DLC/sequel is much of the same except with lower difficulty. Everything else is generally improved however.

Strong recommendation for both: :5of5:

King Arthur: A Knight's Tale.

The closest thing to a 'girlboss' is Lady Boudicea. A couple(?) female archers, no(?) female frontline fighters. No focus on gratuitous sex. Fun combat.
A game about Arthurian legend featuring people who are actually British! Don't expect any africans wandering around.

Other than Mordred and a few villains, the art style is rather grounded. Wish Mordred had a more grounded art style TBH.

Everything I've seen about this game screams pozzed. Has a huge hate boner for religion, so I'm expecting some libtard preaching.
Anyone who has played it can comment?

Also features girlbosses.

Since apparently this doesn't include games released in 2015, then Dungeon Rats (2016) is the only thing that comes to mind other than ATOM RPG.

Dungeon Rats is fun. I think they might have messed it up a bit with some balance patch tho?

Can you play this in first person mode? Third person games always make me feel vertigo.

No bear sex, no pronouns, no girlbosses, just mecha ramming into each other and guns.

Out of all factions the Church (and faction-like NPCs like Mercy) is probably the second or third most positively portrayed faction (after the monks who maintain the ship and maybe the mutants). It's not Dawkins-style fedorabotting or SJWism, just normal Slavic being weary and pessimistic of causes and ideologies.

If anything's 'preachy', it's that humans are selfish and flawed.

The 'commie' faction is probably the most negatively portrayed of all of them, as a bunch of totalitarian stuck-up hardasses with their own Stasi, surveillance, 1984-style public banners and what have you.

The female NPCs tend to be as capable as men but that's standard RPG fare. No ********, no social justice causes, no sexuality. Some dark-skinned NPCs but it's not mentioned or embellished. All characters form a monolithic 'civilization' with no minority 'parallel society' or 'homosexual underground'.

I can't remember, it might be available as a cheat, but it wouldn't work very well.

Going to be honest, I'm just tired of games that are social commentaries on modern politics. I don't know where it might fall, but, **** I'm tired of it. It's like sandpaper, it slowly wears you down.

ATOM is set in a soviet nuclear wasteland and barely brings up actual communism as anything other than a joke. Hexogen, one of your followers, is an anti-communist Leninist monarchist. Probably making fun of people who spend too much time on political labels, but he's funny nonetheless without actually touching on political subjects.

Archolos is quite good BTW, I enjoyed it more than any of the four Gothic games.

I've been spending a good deal of time on this one lately:

It has a sequel that just came out.

Also good:

If we count remakes I'd put the Bard's Tale Trilogy and the newest Geneforge on the list.

How "loosely" D&D rules are applied in that first game? It looks pretty awesome like a modern goldbox game.

Is anyone aware of anything that's altered in these for the worse?
Remakes/remasters seem to sneak a lot of garbage in these days.

They made Solo Iron Man on Insane Psychopathic Rapist difficulty impossible (like actually impossible), since they removed every strategy that could reliably get you past certain run stopping encounters. I detailed a bunch of the changes back in the codex thread, but basically the robot fights are impossible since they removed headshots with the crossbow (mechs had unarmored heads before so xbow headshots did massive damage) and changed their behaviour to make baiting them to closed doors far less effective.

Huge change was nerfing spear proc into the ground, so it does only a small fraction of the damage it once did on interrupt and cannot crit. Pretty much every solo iron man psycho playthrough relied on spears.

Changed behaviour for enemies with bombs, it used to be you could render bomb wielders ineffective by standing near one of their allies, so they would not throw their bombs because it would damage their own. Now enemies don't give a **** and will gladly damage their own allies to bomb you.

Removed a bunch of healing alchemy ingredients that used to be in front of the Emperor fight.

Also I believe they reduced the total possible number of skill points you can get.

Etc.

I've only played the 1st and some of the 2nd; they are excellent. The remakes feature UI/QOL/Graphics updates with no content alterations. They should all be fine.

Oh yes, how could I forget BRIGAND. Which recently even got certified for a GOG release.
[/media]

Genuinely great FPS RPG. The graphics might make you think it is some ironic, meta-retro game (like that ****** **** cruelty squad) but it is a totally sincere effort to make the best possible game in a very limited engine, and the guy succeeded. Energetic, unique setting with a cast of characters that aren't just a bunch of cynical assholes. Quite a lot of variety in how you can approach a playthrough, both in the form of story branches and the effect of skill choices.

Some of the base rules are changed by default like a shared inventory, or less xp for leveling, or how bard songs work. But there are "legacy" options for anything that was changed so you can play them just like the originals.

Yes, modern goldbox is what the dev was going for. The rules are a little strange, it's basically a combination of AD&D with some D20. There is some learning curve, but everything is thoroughly documented in the in-game help. And you're best off looking through the many rules options to set things how you like.

I kind of want to play this and had my eye on it for a while but FPS games make me feel kinda claustrophobic.

Balrum, 2016.

I rarely ever see this mentioned, not quite sure why. I enjoyed it but also don't remember why I didn't finish it. Did clock a good bit of time into it. I recall it having one of those 'other worldly' feels to it that very few RPGs invoke, hard to describe.
Authrpg certified, I believe.

I purposely left 'Authentic RPG' not well defined because it was more of a general gist, an "I know it when I see it" kind of thing.
Minimal pozz, minimal relationship(as in sexual or similar, not just having companions) ********, minimal interracial/homosexuality, minimal ESG, minimal girlbossing, minimal predatory consumer practices.
I'm just worn out by modern games. I want RPGs that feel like the RPGs of yore, authentic. I don't want to feel like I'm playing someone's propaganda piece that's being presented to Klaus Schwab for review.

I think Titan Outpost hits all those marks, yeah.

Missed an obvious one:

No comment needed here. It is Grimoire. Arguably one of the better examples of what may define a modern 'authrpg', at least in its subgenre.

Good D20 game. There's no campaign yet, but the arena mode is fine for creating a party and killing monsters.
