Newspost to get you guys to tell me if you have any problems viewing this and/or it's not a feature you want. Thanks.

I don't have a pdf plugin, but it sounds like a good thing for sharing books.

This would be great for a bunch of out of print rulebooks I have. Will it only pull from the vault or if you post something from, say, Internet Archive can that also be imbedded?

Works for any URL that points to an actual PDF file. Would probably be best to rehost it on the Vault first tho, you can use the URL download feature.Acrux wrote: ↑ November 10th, 2024, 01:42This would be great for a bunch of out of print rulebooks I have. I like this feature and looks like it works fine. And presumably it can be used in conjunction with the Vault to post stuff that looks good without using an external site. I like it.
Well, then here's an interesting use case.
Could be material for an anonymous RPGHQ Journal of Games. (Submissions just a thread. Reviewers vote in poll. The "editor" selects vault pdf links from the thread to put in a second, more organized thread. Would now look good?)
There is currently competition from a total of 1 normal looking journal (IEEE, dominated by mostly papers on AI), and a couple of unbelievably low quality, pure fluff journals with all the crap you expect from "humanities" circa 2024 - borderline pointless, silly, and unreadable. "ChatGPT - The Future of Queer Play?" "Greening Vvanderfell. An Ecocritical Retrospective on The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind " "Queering Data and Dating: AroAce Modding and File System Playgrounds in Stardew Valley " You know, really important high quality technical papers to be preserved for hundreds of years, as you can imagine.

While this feature most likely won't see much use, I can think of a few neat uses for it. It could be used to reminisce about old gaming magazines/guides that existed before the internet gave quick access to walkthroughs/cheat codes, educational documents that cannot be condensed without missing out on important visuals, or a checklist + chart that someone would want to share with a consistent format while playing with others. It works quite well in my browser(Brave) so I'm not opposed to having it as a feature.

None of the content is hosted on the HQ itself. Anything hosted on the Vault is subject to the terms of the Vault and DMCA takedown notices can follow the procedure outlined there: https://vault.rpghq.org/dmca

This would be great for tabletop rpg-related content.

I have shitloads of D&D (1e/2e AD&D, 3e and 3.5) and DA RPG books, and am willing to share if there is something that I have that others are wishing for.
Note though that it is possible to find most of this stuff at these sites (these are where I got mine):

and

Test. Edit. So must use the "direct" link (on the vault) rather than file link. Then it works great.
Edit. Probably even cooler would be the option in the vault to generate a 10 minute link url ahead of uploading the file, maybe once per 10 minutes. Then the link on the vault could be embedded into the pdf itself. Currently the template links to forum thread in the pdf.
Either way looks good. I'll post the template later when time...

Paging @rusty_shackleford. Is there any reason why my PDF refuse to embed? Whenever I try to do so, I just get this error message: "You cannot use certain BBCodes: pdf." I even went out of my way to download the pdf and upload it to the vault to see if that was the issue. If it helps, I was trying to post in the "Technology & Other Scientific Shenanigans" board.
Even when trying to post this reply, it would let me put the word pdf in brackets without blocking it.

tldr is there's no way to force it to only embed PDFs, turns out that browsers just take the filetype as a hint rather than interpreting it strictly. Really cool and definitely doesn't make it useless for user-generated content!

Same problem, look at how it's embedded in the OP. It takes the filetype as merely a hint.loregamer wrote: ↑ May 13th, 2025, 19:21How about markdown files can those be supported
Or same problem?
