What is the most unlikeable protagonist you have played as?

No RPG elements? It probably goes here!

Steelbeard's Son in Risen 3 - guy has a voice like he's been gargling with broken glass all of his life and he's a *****.

Lone Wanderer from Fallout 3 - no matter what choices you make you always come off like a bumbling dumbass.

Copper from Lands of Lore 3 - All of the annoyances of a typical Westwood protagonist with none of the endearing qualities. A prick to just about everyone and not in a good way, also a half-human mutt.

Nameless Hero in Gothic 3 - Irritating voice, horrible death cry, goes from being an aloof **** blessed by the gods to a pussy.

A Plague Tale

First scene in the game has a girl and her dad on horseback in the Middle Ages and she starts going off on her dad about how she should lead people. 30 seconds into the game and I'm already on the rat's side. (And I loathe rats!) Quit before the intro was done.

Dreamfall Chapters

Two insufferable people in one game! You interchange between an annoying woman and a gay jerk (you don't find out till maybe 1/3 in). Most NPC dialog was short until this one black freak starts going off on why the Hillary Clinton clone in-game character is better than the Trump clone in-game character. A little later you get a dream sequence where the in-game woman talks about how much better her voice is now than before. (I looked this up, the dev had a dispute with the old voice actress and made fun of her in the new game. Petty little #(*&$#.) And finally I quit when as gay-jerk you have the option to kill off an NPC that was borking a kid-fairy or something and the **** game tries to make you feel bad about it. Sick filth wrote this game! (Same sick freak who did Dustborn later! ) Writers like this degenerate actually do belong on a cross.

Nameless Fantasy Strategy Game

I've since forgotten the name, but it's probably in the 2013-ish range. Anyway, one of the only times an elf woman is the main character and even pointy ears weren't enough to get me to overlook her insufferableness. Goes against her dad (OF COURSE), leads an army and joins forces with lizard things instead of wiping them out like her elders suggested. Even has an idiotic pro-multiculturalism speech right in the middle. Quit after 3 zones I believe.

9S. That hacking minigame got old quick.
I also hated every main character in GTA 5 especially Trevor.

If I'm being perfectly honest, the only thing I can recall truly loathing was the entire cast of GTA V. The whole lot of them were utterly dreadful, I must say

Because they have a fixed protagonist and don't let you choose how to roleplay them. Geralt is only as much of an ******* as you want him to be.

If we're counting Western RPG player-controllable avatars, I roleplay my Rogue Trader protagonist by choosing "what is the most psychopathically arrogant option?" at every dialogue. (It results in a mix of Dogmatic and Heretic.)

JRPG protagonists are high because devs started trying to cater to the f*male adueince in the early 00s

Holy ****, I despised Trevor when playing GTA 5. Genuinely ruined my mood when I had to do his story missions.
Also, Arthur Morgan is a fuckwad too.
"No, miss German lady, I can't help you and your young daughter by saving your husband from bloodthirsty bandits. I ain't risking my skin for that nonsense!"
"What's that, mister ****** doctor? You don't want me to go after some roughnecks who told you to leave town because it would bring more trouble down the road? Where are these sons o' *******? I'm gonna shoot every single one of them without remorse!"
******* hate Rockstar, the limey *******.

I just found him extremely annoying and unlikable, while I did enjoy the first 3 Uncharted games they aren't something I would play again. IIRC I think I liked 2 the most. The 4th game just made me hate ND, the devs and the entire series retroactively

Aiden from Dying Light 2. Kyle from the first game was stupid as **** but this one is irredeemable. Other ones I don't remember because I probably just dropped games with such characters after watching them die (looking at you "Monkey" from Enslaved).

Well you liked the games before the horrendous 4th installment, your opinion is alright. The reason you hate Nathan is because he was written by a woman.

The second game overall is just infinitely worse than the first one, Aiden doing a Kyle impression the entire game didn't help either.

Many Western RPGs didn’t have real protagonists — they were characters created by the player, without an actual personality (or rather, the player would project a personality onto them) .Like, I can’t really name Shepard or the Warden from Dragon Age: Origins because I’m the one who shaped their personality. If they turned out annoying, that’s on me.

So it makes sense that a large portion of those games can’t really be mentioned in this thread.

For example, the Shin Megami Tensei games, despite being JRPGs, avoid this issue because the protagonists are silent characters who don’t really have distinct personalities of their own.

Most JRPGs, on the other hand, feature a set protagonist, so the chances of ending up with an annoying one are logically much higher.

Max and Chloe from Life is Strange, screw them both. Max, despite literally having time altering powers, failed to stop the incoming storm. Chloe justifies her destructive, immature behavior by blaming everyone else for her problems: "I did drugs, vandalized property, stole a gun from a cop I didn’t know how to use, and nearly got myself and my friend killed? Must be society’s fault!" What a wretched ****.

So it's comparing one specific game to another specific game? By the way, two of the games on the JRPG list are Dragon Quest.
This feels pretty biased — you could just as easily compare the Dragonborn to Fei from Xenogears, for example, and make the same point but in reverse. :notsureif:

I didn’t like them either — I despised their personalities. They were both cowards and hypocrites.
But I have to admit, it also felt pretty realistic in a way.

(female) V in Cyberpunk was both pretty insufferable and lame. You don't really have any meaningful choices to make and character just fell behind your edgy friend Johnny Silverhand.
Oh, you made your character have a "corpo" background? You betcha that's pretty much never-ever-ever coming up again. Aside from maybe couple unique lines.
I did play on release though, so I'm unaware if they made any adjustments in V / background value / player choices departments.

The guy in True Crime: Streets of LA. Endless cringe one liners throughout with a subpar VA. I played it after beating Vice City and Mafia 1 so perhaps that had an effect.

He's a perfectly normal guy. Custom appearance, distinct and cool voice with no annoying personality quirks (unless you hate Cyberpunk slang I guess) I don't know what there is to hate about him.

I suppose I should edit my message to clarify that I was talking about the female V.
Maybe the VA is at fault, but it never felt like she could hold banter — or even a normal conversation — properly with any of the characters, mainly Johnny and Goro. She never delivered her lines in a way that didn’t come off as plain bitchy for no reason.
