So now virtual characters can be voice actors? You mean the little blonde *** has a non binary VA. Erik is literally just a dude obsessed with nature. Not his fault the english dubbing studio selected a ***** to voice him. German and Japanese have normal voice actors.

Yes, I'm sure it was completely out of capcom's hands to select the voice actor used for the main version of the game, the version the majority will be playing.Finarfin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 01:56Not his fault the english dubbing studio selected a ***** to voice him.

In regard to Wilds, yes. I haven't added it to the list yet but I did a write-up highlighting various things: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Woke_ ... 3790100782
Was there always such heavy environmental messaging in Monster Hunter?
Killing overly predatory monsters to "protect an ecosystem" is somewhat believable, but making those monsters man-made weapons of destruction is just over-the-top and completely unnecessary.
I'm going to have to go back and look into World again.

Indeed. It gets a pass when it really shouldn't. Here's a quick list of what makes it woke:
- Body Type A/B instead of Male/Female. Walk cycles were named "Confident/Graceful" instead of "Manly/Feminine"
- They removed armor differences that were on males/females and now all sexes have the same armor appearance
- There is a bunch of diversity inserted that wasn't in previous entries (as shown on the screenshots above)
- They dumbed down the gameplay to make it more accessible and lowered the monster's HP so it's easier than ever beat them. Focus Mode makes charged attacks and combos home in on weak spots whenever you activate it. It doesn't even need to be activated at the beginning or end of a combo, it can be used in the middle of attacking too. No need for proper positioning, attack timing, and aiming when you can just activate Focus Mode to make your Greatsword character (Slowest weapon user) do a complete 180 to hit the monster weakspot.
- The Palico is dumbed down too. He can use any type of skill available once you level him up enough and complete sidequests. He can even revive you if you end up dying which wasn't an option in past games. Before this game, there was a pet area where you recruit new Palicoes, trained them, and gradually created your compatible cat companion through hunts.
- Capcom is looking to increase their DEI + ESG compliance in the future. (https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/dat ... ocial.html) (https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/csr.html)

You sure about this? I've heard this from multiple people but all the gameplay footage I've seen appears to show unlabeled presets.

You use "appearance presets" to determine sex. Pretty deliberate decision to avoid using male/female IMOFurin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 04:44You sure about this? I've heard this from multiple people but all the gameplay footage I've seen appears to show unlabeled presets.

My bad, looks like you are correct. Voices and Bodies are named "Presets". Although the fact that the game allows you to mix and match female + male traits together is concerning. The fact that the game doesn't give a clear name despite voices are clearly male/female, the walk cycles are feminine/masculine, etc. yet allows you to have facial hair (beards, moustaches, etc.) as a woman is clear evidence of subversiveness at least.Furin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 04:44You sure about this? People don't what causes NPCs to refer the player by "He" or "She" but it has been deduced that the even voice "Presets" (aka Female voices) make them call you "She" while the odd voice "Presets" make them refer to you as "He".

I actually thought it was rather interesting how often the game has the player character with another npc in dialogue so npcs use "them" to actually refer to multiple people and not just the player character directly.

Up until now, I've considered "unlabeled presets" more subtle compared to the more explicit use of "body type."
However, I agree it's just another way of circumventing a clear male/female distinction. Maybe "unlabeled presets" should also be considered overt.
I'll have to think about that.

Addressing the player title with a particular title instead of "he" or "she" or even "them" is something that modern Western games have been doing quite a bit, like I remember Assassin's Creed Valhalla simply calling the player "Wolf Kissed" while in Tyranny the player is simply called "Fatebinder".
That's a really shrewd way to avoid using he/she while at the same time avoid using "they" if you ask me.

It's equally subversive. There's nothing inherently worse by writing "body type" because it's technically correct, since it's a 3D model
I apologize if my responses were not relevant to your needs. As an AI language model, I do not have personal beliefs or opinions, and I only provide responses based on the information provided to me.
Sad but informative, thanks. I have to say I'm not convinced by some of the wording (is protecting biodiversity really "pro-climate action"? seems more like a vanilla environment-friendly theme to me) and examples (judging only from that one scene, the relationship between Maki and Gemma doesn't strike me as homoerotic, but more like a "girl finding an elder sister she never had" type of thing).Furin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 04:05In regard to Wilds, yes. Maybe my memory is faulty, but I don't remember messaging of any kind from the PSP-era games.Furin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 04:05Was there always such heavy environmental messaging in Monster Hunter?
There was minimal plot, no narrative cutscenes, and the feeling was of a timeless world where nature is not threatened by humans as much as the opposite.
I have to hand it to Wilds though for naming the eternal (((Wyverian))).
...Whut? That must be the dumbest plot evolution I've ever heard about. If they can mass-produce monsters, how the **** did that civilization ever get destroyed?Furin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 04:05Killing overly predatory monsters to "protect an ecosystem" is somewhat believable, but making those monsters man-made weapons of destruction is just over-the-top and completely unnecessary.
Edit: ****, let me guess. They went with the "We built a mega-monster and forgot to install an off-switch, oops" route, didn't they?

Does Capcom do in-house translations or hire third parties? Either way, I'm sure the lead English translator is a ****** or ******-adjacent whose twitter feed has lots of flags in it.
You did a great job with your research! I didn't look at the cutscenes or dialogue (since I'm not getting the game) but I had no clue there was so many instances of subversive nessaging.Furin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 04:05In regard to Wilds, yes. Here's an instance of Alma referring to the player character as he when attacked by the Dire Dogashuma. But there are other non-cutscene unvoiced dialogue when talking to NPCs at camp as well. According to the threads below, the Palico is the most likely to refer to you as "He/She" during dialogue since you are alone with him the most.Furin wrote: ↑ March 5th, 2025, 05:14I didn't see any voice lines referring to the player character as "he" or "she." However, in this game, you are protecting biodiversity from disappearing due to over-predation by man-made monsters (the guardians).
In other words, you are protecting the "balance of nature" from humanity's negative influence.
edit: especially since it's established guardians don't need to eat and don't reproduce so they're just killing out of bloodlust.
