Greg Street's new MMO
Greg Street's new MMO
People following the MMO genre might have remembered that Greg Street of WoW fame left Blizzard for Riot Games to direct their League of Legends MMO, and then a couple years ago announced he was leaving Riot. Now we have a glimpse of what he has been working on now:
Floating sky islands like a Granblue Fantasy or a Xenoblade MMO are a cool concept, but the implementation of the blue zones makes it sound like the game is going to be a lobby looter-shooter esque game like Warframe where you chill in an hub and then go out into instances randomized levels to farm loot and then come back. Not interested.
Hard to tell what the final product would look like, but the generic plasticky artstation western high fantasy look of the concept arts is a turnoff.

Seems to be WoW combat and has the holy trinity. He showed off playing through the blue zones in groups of 3 players. He kept emphasizing that things could change, but if they are aiming for the really small party size format like you see in modern multiplayer games of 3 to 4 people, then the holy trinity will probably stick and you won't see stuff like real support roles.J1M wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2025, 20:59Is this WoW with different graphics? Not sure who wants that.
So far the main gimmick is that there are two types of zones, half of them are preset like in your average MMO while the other half are randomly generated like in Diabloe/roguelites, and are aimed at "small groups".
Like Valter said, that thumbnail doesn't give me much confidence with this game (front and center character has danger hair and brownish skin alongside being "non-binary" looking like others I saw. Also, like with Fortnite, no human white male is shown without having his face covered or being half-monstruous or things like that). The showcase was also all female characters that I saw though the usual default I would expect would be a featureless mannequin-like being. I liked the skating down the hill part, but the rest I am not too conviced as the above make me too suspicious to really like this game for now, but we shall see. It did have other characters somewhat shown, and it is too early to really lose hope for something nice being made, but still, many things that are not confidence inducing for me.

I hate the Antichrist!
From what I have seen, a lot of MMO players were looking forward to Greg Street and Riot's new MMO as being perhaps the last hope for the genre, perhaps being able to do something really new and revolutionize the genre like WoW did. Maybe something revolutionary like Everquest Next was imagined to be with its moldable terrain and "storybricks". Basically the next leap. But this 3-4 man instanced lobby game like Warframe is just stuff we've seen before countless times for the last 15 years.LemonDemonGirl wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2025, 23:07"This game looks too much like WoW waaah!"
