******** gaming buzzwords that are thoughtlessly thrown around
I'll start:
—Gameplay loop
This feels like one of those terms invented because "gameplay" didn't sound smart enough to hipsters.

Nah Gameplay loop is fine for modern games. Pretty accurately describes the repetitiveness of them.

its 1997

repetition is a key component in games, not just video games. it's not inherently a bad thing1998 wrote: ↑ July 22nd, 2023, 17:52Nah Gameplay loop is fine for modern games. Pretty accurately describes the repetitiveness of them.
Yeah I guess you are right. Its just a matter of how you present it. If you know an hour ahead of time what's coming up, that just sucks. A game shouldn't feel like some flow chart.aweigh wrote: ↑ July 22nd, 2023, 18:40repetition is a key component in games, not just video games. it's not inherently a bad thing1998 wrote: ↑ July 22nd, 2023, 17:52Nah Gameplay loop is fine for modern games. "Fun"
I know it describes something particular to video games, but using "ludonarrative dissonance" ousts you as a soyboy.

Using "ludo-" in general to refer to anything related to gaming. It's just something academics do to make themselves feel like they're important.Rigwort wrote: ↑ July 22nd, 2023, 19:42I know it describes something particular to video games, but using "ludonarrative dissonance" ousts you as a soyboy.

I don't get the hate for a lot of these. I think you should be required to suggest a valid alternative if you're going to post in this thread. What are you supposed to say instead of 'gameplay'? 'Play'? I think 'gameplay' is more specific and therefore superior for communication. And again, what other term exists to describe 'ludonarrative dissonance'? I can't think of any. You'd have to devote a full sentence to describe the same idea without 'ludonarrative dissonance'.
Thread is more about "thoughtlessly thrown around" than terminology, imo.
Autism thread.

Most of the time you can just use the description. "Story clashing with mechanics" takes just as many syllables as "ludonarrative dissonance" although I don't need to give you a definition. That's the problem.

yeah c&c is a good one, tweed.
the ******** "muh c&c" ******** has completely poisoned the well, it has made rpg discussion and even sometimes general game discussion almost impossible. one of the worst things to ever happen to gaming discourse, and a big victory for anti-gameplay storyfags.

I am tired of walking simulator being used on games where you do more than just walk. Maybe Call of Cthulhu was a walking simulator since you move so slow since that seems to be the main criteria. It makes the tag useless. Better yet Steam tags are useless because they are mainly for jokes.
It's a way of describing if your actions actually matter in the game with branching quests and endings. It is sad that the descriptor came about since many RPG's chose to keep it simple like Baldur's Gate.aweigh wrote: ↑ July 22nd, 2023, 23:09yeah c&c is a good one, tweed.

Immersion was a word that really chapped NMA in the *** for about 10 years or so before people started using other buzzwords.

But does it have SOUL.
Things don't have SOUL anymore, they have SOVL.
How can **** games have soul when ***** are soulless flesh automatons?
Their perception of idyllic Western/Christian culture, primarily. A lot them are ironically "westaboos", they can't get enough of the Edwardian aesthetic and European standards of beauty.Fedora Master wrote: ↑ July 23rd, 2023, 05:24How can **** games have soul when ***** are soulless flesh automatons?
I prefer Japanese games when they're based on Japanese culture. The westaboo stuff is cringe.
