FYI there's two(? maybe three?) guides that will help you out in chapter 1
I don't remember their names tho. One of them escorts you to the swamp camp, I think another may just show you around the area? Perhaps another is an escort to the new camp?
Been a long time since I played so I'd need to replay to confirm.

anyways, you get full XP+loot when they kill stuff

I already mentioned them, for the NC it's Mordrag, you need to get t5he quest to get rid of him from thorus though and the other is the novice also in the old camp. I also forgot his name currently.

Currently level 4, mostly strength focused. (I'm thinking of avoiding magic and going for melee weapons.) Image

Found my way to the mine and managed to kill some mine crawler ants by staying out of their reach up on some platforms and ledges. Snagged two magic rings and a Bone bow from the ant tunnels before heading to the New Camp. So far I've been enjoying the landscape while travelling around. The colors can be a bit bland at times but there are lots of varied terrain elevations which are keeping things interesting.

► Still Exploring...
I've made it to level 9 and found my way to the camp of the 'Sleeper'. The New Camp wasn't the most friendly place and I had to put one of the Rice Lord's men into the ground after he attempted to force me to give water to the farmers every day. Hope that wasn't the wrong decision as I can't undo it. Image I thought downing a human opponent with your melee weapon would just knock them out, but the thug was dead. Is there some trick to non-lethal combat?

So far I've been using a Long Bow I found to take down anything heavier than a wolf... it's working for the most part but Orcs and Snappers are still just death. The armor that I bought in the Old Camp feels like it is made of paper.

You won't get anything better till you join a camp, that's life. Also, no the bandits shouldn't have died on the spot from being beaten. If you killed Lefty then you missed out on humiliating him by making him fetch the water instead.

Normally you need to kill enemies with intention, (using the action on them when they are KOed) you may have encountered a bug. It really is not a big deal to kill him though.

Tweed is not correct here you can get a lot of better weapons including the best 1 handed sword in the first chapter and while I do not know where to find a bow specifically since I never use them, you can find late game weapons lying around, gated by strong enemies like Orcs and snappers, the issue here is of course that you can't beat them yet.

some tips for weapon upgrades when you want to:
Easy Upgrade for melee, for which you do not need any prior knowledge of location, it's the most "legit" upgrade for new player:
► Show Spoiler
one-hander for late-game in chapter one
► Show Spoiler
The best weapon in the game in chapter one:
► Show Spoiler
That is the basic upgrade path I take.

You can't really do anything regarding your squishiness in chapter one, however Armor and life (through level ups) make a huge difference in any case. My recommendation is using magic rings to boost your defence to the max. Those are only sold by the "mages" (including Gurus) and you can buy better ones when the chapters progress but even taking the low tier ones improves the situation manifold. With the weapons mentioned in the spoilers you can eliminate any enemy on the map in chapter 1.

I was talking about armor, not weapons though you can exploit the game to get the ore armor as well. The bone bow in the old mine is a decent starter bow and can be used with a few boosting rings.

I always disliked the lack of armor in PB games. I get they wanted you to get a real upgrade when you progress the story etc., but they should have introduced more equipment slots.

I on the other hand it the lack of armor is a benefit to it's design, it just feels amazing to get an upgrade.

That said, G1 makes a mistake by introducing "the best armor" for everyone (outside the very specific unique guild of course with Xardas) destroying their own design philosophy.
They did it better in G2 and then NOTR came, which is one reason I find it shit.

Rusty wants to play Morrowind.
I'd just prefer it if you could find booties, gloves, helmets, etc., Keep the main armor itself as it is.

Just wanted to share that I will be able to continue playing too and from where I left off because Gothic and Redemption's savegames survived the pc memory wipe due to the games saving them in their own main folder instead of Documents on C

Managed to make it in 8 hours this time, I have over a dozen of playthrough on Gothic 1&2 (never played the third since it looks like crap) and Risen 1, so of course I can do it much faster than a new player.

Made it to Level 10 and mastered both the bow and one handed weapons. Neither the Sleeper's cult or the Rice Lord's peasants and rogues seemed worth throwing my lot in with so I'm going to join the old camp.

I noticed that the melee combat has a bit more depth to it than I first thought. If you time your attacks wolves will go flying into the air when you counter their jumps with a forward attack. Snappers can also be driven back in a similar fashion.

Did you meant the focus stone? Then yes, you should have either mana increasing amulets or rings in your inventory by now so this shouldn't be a problem.

I've encountered something a bit strange. An individual named Nyras has taken the sleeper cult's magic focus and yells "DIIIIIIIIEE!" when asked about it. Then he runs backwards off a cliff to his death and if I follow him down gravity finishes me off as well.

So I reloaded and this time after talking to him he ran into the forest. I chased him constantly until he finally ran into the old camp, then the castle... then the Fire Mage temple which I can't enter. Is this a bug or part of the quest? It feels strange, he seemed to be getting ready to attack, but then the mad dash instead.

Edit:
The solution was to select "End" instead of any other dialog option when he challanges you for approaching him. Then beat him unconscious without provocation. Not sure if it is the way it was supposed to be solved, but I took the focus off him so hopefully that is good enough.

I killed my way through a band of black goblins, two lizards and two lurkers using all I had to make it through (leveling up as well in the process) to get to a cave the goblins seemed to be guarding. My reward was a poker, a potion and a wooden spoon.
Not complaining though, I love this game, though I have seen little of the story as of now by sticking to exploring and traveling through the woods.

Just wanted to say that my pc died again after it froze as usual, so it's back in the bench for me at the moment and back to Bloodlines only until I can fix this thing.
