Honestly not even sure if I'd called it a JRPG, it's just an RPG made in Japan. Very good.

Have Yakuza 0 installed, but the side content kind of put me off. I will eventually get to play the whole Yakuza series, but right now doesnt seem to be the time.

Wishlisted. Price is a bit too much for what I'm willing to spend rait nao but I see it's been on sale multiple times. Never played a Yakuza game but this being standalone feels less intimidating.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's a unique game even within its field. Gameplay wise it's just (slightly more) simplified take on the general Dragon Quest formula, which in itself is already a simplified take on Wizardry, but Y:LAD more than makes up for it with everything else. Story, characters, plot, the city(ies) you get to explore, all of the different mini-games and amusing side-quests, it's all got so much charm and heart poured into it and you can immediately tell they had a blast writing the game. It's an obvious love letter to JRPGs in general, not just Dragon Quest.

It does make you wonder why Japanese devs don't make more modern-day JRPGs like that, though. It's such a winning formula. The only other "modern day" JRPG I can think of off the top of my head are the Persona games but... yeah, not exactly the same thing. You'd think the market is ripe for YLAD clones.

One thing that kind of disappointed me was when Like a Dragon: Ishin was announced and turned out to be another beat 'em up. Not that I don't like all of the Yakuza games, but I was kind of hoping that Like a Dragon would be the name they use for future turn based JRPGs. Kind of weird to just randomly change the name of the series and then go back to more traditional gameplay after Y7.

I mean, completely changing the sub-genre of the main series was already a ballsy move. Very glad they did, though.

I mean, Ishin's a remake. Like a Dragon 8 is likely gone be a jrpg. Or a jrpg+ beat em up.

Good point. I didn't know that Ishin is a remake. I've only made it through 0, Kiwami, and 7 so far. I don't know anything about any of the games that aren't on PC. Also welcome to the site bro. I'm ashamed that I didn't think to invite you.

There's 2 types of JRPGs. There's the kind that normal people could reasonably enjoy, and then there's the kind that are fanservice games for people who masturbate to shitty Japanese porn cartoons. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a game that can be enjoyed by perfectly normal, heterosexual men.

Right now all but 2 spin offs made it to pc so do check then out.
Never mind about the invite. If I couldn't figure it out I probably shouldn't be here.

Not sure if I'm even gonna finish it, kind of overstays its welcome and has far too many cutscenes towards (presumably) the ending.

Yeah, the game is too cutscene heavy, that was probably my biggest gripe with it. Some of the cutscenes were really good though, and you almost know immediately which ones were the good ones, and which ones were skippable. It's possible to enjoy a game and still have a grasp of what's going on without giving a shit about intricacies and minutia of the lore or story elements.
