Gothic 3

Post by rusty_shackleford »

I'm long overdue for playing this again, I need to figure out what mods to use.
I found some old quotes from me:
Turn up the Entity.ROI in the ge3.ini to increase the radius the world simulates at(enemies appear, NPCs act, etc.,) Game feels like it was intended to be played with a super high setting but it makes the game lag pretty bad. 8000 is a decent compromise(4000 is default)
The content added by the quest pack + content mod is mandatory, the game feels unfinished without it and it was rather good/faithful additions.
Also suggest turning "Alternate Balance" off(can't remember which mod adds it, Community Patch perhaps?), as it feels like you're simply never increasing in power with it on.

I believe there's also a recent patch that improves performance(this? https://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_678.htm ), going to spend time digging into mods for the game to see what I can find now. :pipe-hat:

Because most of the mod-related stuff for G3 is in germoid, this will take some time.

It's a worthwhile endeavor. It's trying to fix all the jank left when they rushed the game out the door.

For example, the fallen city that just has a few undead and a lightweight demon in it.
You can find more dangerous caves nearby.

Mod pack download, extract to vanilla Gothic 3(I used the GOG install, Steam may work?) directory & overwrite all: https://f.rpghq.org/gt6nqUZwRceg.zip?n= ... _Final.zip

Why? Because a lot of people don't want to fuck around with mods. Especially when the mods are scattered across sites, in various languages, etc., You can just download this, slap it over an existing install, replace files, and get playing. It might not be the optimal setup for what you want to do, but it will at least let you see what the Gothic 3 community has done with an objectively terrible base game.

Is that everything?
NO.
I strongly suggest you disable Alternative Balancing when you get ingame, it's on the main menu.
You need to install this font system wide, there's no way to load fonts from the directory(yes, including overriding the Gothic3.ttf -- it appears to be a red herring, it never even loads it no matter the setting! It's built into the game data)
https://f.rpghq.org/xMGSJfcBLCz1.zip?n=Metamorphous.zip

Read on if you want to know more!
I made a 'frozen' installation of a standard mod installation for Gothic 3, this is for a GOG install(may work with Steam too?).
Contents:

Code: Select all

Community Patch 1.75.14
Parallel Universe Patch 1.0.5
Update Pack 1.05.10
QuestPaket 4.2
Content Mod 3.1 + Consequences 2.0
This was created by using a linux overlay fs with the clean installation as the bottom layer.

Try playing around with Entity.ROI in Ini/ge3.ini if you want. Bigger number = bigger simulation radius.

I need to mess around with these, so you can feel free to too:

Code: Select all

Render.PrefetchGridCellSize=10000
Render.PrefetchGridCellSizeLowPoly=34000
DistanceHigh.fFarClippingPlane_High=13000.0
DistanceHigh.fFarClippingPlane_Medium=8000.0
DistanceHigh.fFarClippingPlane_Low=6000.0
DistanceLow.fFarClippingPlaneLowPolyMesh_High=100000.0
DistanceLow.fFarClippingPlaneLowPolyMesh_Medium=50000.0
DistanceLow.fFarClippingPlaneLowPolyMesh_Low=25000.0
Probably can 3x those, they should all be modified in the same proportion

Do you suggest this for first time playthroughs?

Yea, because the base game is so incredibly barebones. It's just a bunch of checklist quests with barely any equipment or interactions.
Play Gothic 2 first if you haven't, it's a direct continuation.

And consider that I'm someone who typically hates mods that add new content unless it's exceptionally well done. Gothic 3 is just that terrible without community content.

Older games used to sometimes give you a copy of the font file they cook into the game. Morrowind does as well with a Daedric font and maybe some others?
