Gothic

Post by Howard Crane »

It's weird to me how things sometimes align perfectly. It's almost as if it was a simulation.

Gothic is one of my all time favorite games. It has a charme to me that is unmatched because of certain German idiosyncracies. Cannot be translated to the anglo sphere, I doubt it. It's decent everywhere else, too. Not great, not fantastic but a good ride anyway, even for English folks. Combat sucks. At first, and then you get used to it and when your skills, i.e. points, improve so does your combat repertoire. And then it opens up a little bit. Bit by bit. Again not fantastic but it's servicable for what it sets out to be. And it is in line with the RPG that it wants to be. You suck at everything basically, at first. Got to climb the ladder. That's what makes it great for me. That and getting banter from the sucker I just stole an heirloom out of his drawer the other night for not letting me sleep in his bed with his wife. Fucking Soy Cuck wants it anyway.

The setting, the atmosphere is fantastic. You feel like you are part of a an actual breathing and living world, Go into somebody's hut and steal shit, get your ass kicked. As opposed to modern RPGs where it's a loot fest and you just go in and get your dialogue and rob the place afterwards. What is this madness?

Go check it out if you haven't. You won't regret it. Well, it's a bit old, like me, so bear with it.

You're preaching to the choir and if you haven't already played Archolos, you need to.

Game features almost zero women, and is almost perfect.
Curious.

Sounds great, thanks for the suggestion. Does it run on a new model PC? I have a pretty new one, like almost 1 year old and I had problems with running DA: Origins.

It's from around 2001, should run on any PC bought in the past decade.

Its my second favorite game of all time. First is Gothic 2 + Notr expansion which i play every year. Im holding off replaying 1 for some time as upcoming remake is supposed to have some content that was cut from the original. Devs seem to be actually listening to the fanbase feedback so will see. They are even keeping the visual progression of the combat where the melee animation gets better as you progress, which i think is a great feature that i don't think iv seen anywhere else. The first two games seriously have atmosphere and immersion like nothing else. The sheer density, good side quest writing and exploration is just great. While i think 2 improved upon most things and was bigger in scope, i think the main story was a bit better in 1. Played Archolos too and for me its the real Gothic 3 ;)

Oh, boy. I started modding that game in 2021 and then falling ofrf again. I remember getting the D3D11 mod and some general bug fix mods. Not much else. Don't thinkg much else is needed. There's a mod manager, or was, that can download and manage that stuff for you. I have played G2 so many times I can't recall, rossy.

Anyway, it's the peak competitor to Dragon Age: Vanguard. In 2024. I will bet all my monero on it.

With some simple patches it's running great looking forward to playing it soon.

Gothic is one of my favorites, not only is it great but it is incredibly german in design, especially the way conversations are portrayed.

I just played it with my son like a let's play, as said in the other thread and he loved it too. It seems to really hit the right notes even for a childs brain, not being too complex but creating a world and story that is well enough executed that it captures the fantasies of a boy his age quite well. He also enjoyed the Ruhpott Humor very much and the occasional "Scheiße!" very much, much to my chagrin since he is well behaved but what's a parent gonna do.

It's a bit of a shame, Gothic is objectively good, even if janky but it is also only one of a handful of german games that is.

Has Gothic ever received a proper fan translation? I've heard the English localization is poor

I don't know but what I heard that the VA is poor, that does not necessarily mean the script is as well.

What is missing is definitely the way germans interact for anyone not being familiar with german and german culture (of the time) i mean our polish bros are potato enough that it stuck with them as well.

If it's anything like elex, then the script is completely butchered.

Fuck the polish tho. Annoying ass niggas clogging up the discussions around the game with their incomprehensible R'lyehian.
If there is a script of the english version and german, I could cross reference I guess and try to do a translation?

The second is better in a lot regards, I overall prefer it, especially due to it's vastly more believable world. That said the colony idea is a very elegant story hook and a great explanation for why the play area is as limited as it is. Quite clever-

It appears there is an unofficial translation project, including DE->EN
https://github.com/auronen/Gothic-1-loc ... n/releases

⚠️⚠️ Warning ⚠️⚠️
If you're using a case sensitive filesystem(read: lunix), you need to extract the files manually into the correct directories, as the case of the directories doesn't match the ones in the actual game installation.

But, this won't allow us to use it with the mod launcher via steam. What to do?
First, install the localization as described in the link above to your Gothic game directory. You want the Gothic_1_Localized.zip file.
Extract this to the same Gothic game directory(again, at the root of it): https://f.rpghq.org/pO5bIvQlD4Wm.zip?n= ... uncher.zip
One file will overwrite the Launcher/Gothic1SteamWorkshopLauncher.exe , I've patched it to use the game's launcher instead of directly starting the game. the other is simply a copy of GothicStarter.exe renamed to GothicSta.exe (it expects a string of a certain length for the game executable name). This will let you launch a custom gothic installation.

If you didn't fuck it up, it should look like this:

(How nice that they've added a translation for people that live in the united kingdom)
Select the localization you want to play with.

Make sure it has the "G1CP 1.2"(You should have the community patch!) & "Union […]" text at the bottom of the menu to ensure it loaded properly. If not, I dunno, try again and then bug me I guess.

I don't know where they came from either since it's a clean install.
