The way the characters are animated reminded me of this:
It looks awful.

2 years after the remake came out (which had it as a pre-order bonus), truly a Nightdive special.

Is anyone familiar with the Lunar games? It looks like they could be anywhere from familiar and cozy to utterly generic.

Never played the first, but got the Lunar 2 box set on the PS that came with all the extra doodads. It's been a bit, but I remember liking it well enough. If you liked Lufia, you'll probably enjoy it. Solidly middle of the pack for JRPGs of the era.Acrux wrote: ↑ April 15th, 2025, 23:19Is anyone familiar with the Lunar games? Experience a charming first-person RPG straight out of the '90s, with lush environments, dark dungeons, sarcastic writing and live-action FMV cutscenes! Go alone or team up with a friend to save Evenfall Bay in this chaotic adventure from the developers behind the freeware hit Wizzerd Quest!
blerghsarcastic writing
Also, the FMV stuff was never meant to be as corny as it seems. Most of those actors were being serious, which is why it aged so well.

I was going to say everything looks great then I scrolled down and:rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 19th, 2025, 19:47RPG based on(? inspired by?) the gamebook series of the same name

The wizard also looks a little weird and try-hard. The fighter and the rogue look great, though. Keep them and redraw the other two - no niggers or women, thanks in advance!
The guy's armor could be a little less cartoony imo as well, but now I'm nitpicking.

The earnestness you saw in Westwood games and Wing Commander FMVs was charming. It seemed like everyone was having a good time and nobody was embarrassed to be there.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ April 19th, 2025, 22:58Also, the FMV stuff was never meant to be as corny as it seems. Nothing feels sincere anymore and it sucks. Zoomers looking at the past and thinking because everything wasn't reheased and reshot 500x times they must have been making mistakes on purposeTangerine wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2025, 01:18The earnestness you saw in Westwood games and Wing Commander FMVs was charming. Sort of like old youtube stuff vs new youtube stuff. Everything just feels too over the top professional.
[edit]
think I wrote this wrong but I can't fix it because I'm mid-migraine and it's not making sense in my head

It's a fairly well known JRPG so I'm surprisedUnhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2025, 18:09Wow an JRPG that Val hasn’t played, never thought I see the day.

Games currently are just a non-stop buffet of streamer-bait, meme trash, corpo slop or otherwise brain pollution of some kind.
I hope everything crashes and burns.

Remember from the JRPG list I compiled he only played 31 of them far enough to vote for them (with a median among all voters of 37 and an average of 53).Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ April 20th, 2025, 18:09Wow an JRPG that Val hasn’t played, never thought I see the day.

They are 90's fantasy anime. The story is just the tried and true coming of age hero's journey. No real surprises. It's comfort food, in that sense. However, the game had a lot of heart and passion put into it and for the time, it was an excellent "vanilla fantasy" anime JRPG.Acrux wrote: ↑ April 15th, 2025, 23:19Is anyone familiar with the Lunar games? The combat has some interesting systems, like having actual distances and multiple attacks and attacks that use zones for areas of effect, so one sword skill from Kyle strikes enemies in a single line and one sword skill that Alex has causes a explosion that deals damage in a circle area.
Again, absolutely nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking but for the time it had anime cutscenes, great music, vibrant graphics and the dialogue doesn't take itself too seriously most of the time while not being a straight up "gag anime" game.
I really liked them when I played the PS1 versions when I was like 12 years old. I think its a great "baby's first JRPG". But, its somewhat of a relic of the past with nothing really innovative to stand on its own, its more of a "package deal". I played both games again as an adult around 8 years or so and still really liked them, but granted this game is really nostalgic for me so I am unable to not see it with rose tinted glasses. I think the games are fun for what they are if you like JRPGs but I wouldn't pay for the Remasters and instead would advise to pirate them and play them for free on Duckstation.
