Iren's Play-by-post fantasy games - General Discussion thread

Post by Irenaeus »

Hello Adventurers :knight:

This thread serves as an introduction and general discussion of my Play-by-post fantasy games (Iren's PbP). You can read the introduction below or find the related threads about the game here:

Character Creation
Rules
Setting
Prologue
Chapter 1

______________________________________________________________________
This is an introductory post about my future "Play-by-post" games. :dice:

I will be running them on this forum with the participation of whichever adventurer, that is you, who wants to join.
The games will be based on fantasy settings of my creation but familiar to anyone who ever played D&D, and the rules will also be based on old D&D mechanics but adapted to this play-by-post scheme. I have run a couple CYOAs in the past (links here and here) and will be basing my starting game on my experience with them.
We will be starting with the simplest stories and rules to test the format, and if the goals of fun for all are achieved, we may proceed to more complex games. :old:

Who wants to play should leave a post with their expectations and advice. I will be hearing all in preparation for the first one.

I'm game. Played D&D but not PBP before. Sadly, that means I don't have any advice.

I'm interested in playing. Generally, I like stuff that gets into the rules for more than just adventuring that nobody really uses, like downtime, crafting, armies, and that kind of thing, but it's not a hard requirement.

No, not THAT simple. It will have a basic character sheet for each PC with attributes, skills, traits, equipment, spells, etc.

The first adventure I'm planning will feature at least one downtime (unless we get an unlucky TPK). As for crafting and armies, etc., maybe we can get to that if the early, simpler games are really successful.

At least the 4 (fighter, thief, magic user, cleric) with possible expansion if there's interest in that. :goldfish:

More info:
My games will cater to less experienced PbPlayers, with less wordy posts. For pacing, I'm aiming for 2 or 3 paragraphs max and then choices for players. Players will be free to write long posts, but I'm not expecting it.

I'm interested. I'm also interested in strategic-level play, but I realize that's out of scope (for now).

Sounds interesting. If you don't mind having a D&D novice I'd like to join the game. Image

For Play-by-post the participants just post once or so per day on the relevant forum thread?

Most of my experience with D&D is from the video games (Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession, Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale) Is there anything else I should read or will the manuals for those games serve well enough as a primer? :read:

I don't mind novices at all! The game will start very simple.
About the games you mentioned, they are played with AD&D rules which is not what I'm going to use - no point in reading those manuals. Also, they have a huge story/plot which is not what I'm going for.
I'm going to do something much more basic adapting D&D due to my perceived limitations of this medium and also my own limitations in handling these types of games.
There isn't anything to read yet to participate and I'm going to explain the rules for the first game anyway. So, just stand by and wait until I post the first thread of the first game.
For those who want to play something more complex, you should look for the expert forums that were linked in Rusty's thread about examples of PbP.

You could use the basic set, which is well, basic.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_ ... _Basic_Set

Perhaps someone here has played a B/X game before could chime in, but I know it's rather slimmed down compared to AD&D
I think the most popular edition was the "red box", 1983? edition. PHB+DMG comes in together at around 100 pages total.

It's really basic indeed, as the name implies. I played it in the early 90s before I was a teen even with my older cousins back in the day, it was a load of fun. Still, I don't feel confident in mastering these rules even, at least for my first PbP. I'll try to adapt the spirit of older rules into something easier and hopefully more engaging for newcomers. Anyone is free to DM using B/X or AD&D rules, of course, I might even play such game. :pipe-hat:

After some careful consideration over the rules, I've decided to use large parts of ACKS system (read more about this system here and the get the rules here.) for the first game, which like said earlier will be a simpler adventure romp to test the waters in Play-by-post.

Image

I'll adapt to include some mechanics and themes that I enjoy from other simpler RPG systems (torchbearer, beyond the wall) for character generation, background, traits and tracking XP/levels, but in the end it will - hopefully - feel like oldschool D&D. I'll be now making a list of whoever wants to play and prepare the intro and character creation in the next thread which will be the first game.

A question, do you prefer a more stable/point-buy character creation or do you favor the odds of random 3d6 for stats, etc.? Any other suggestions?

Hope you guys enjoy my ideas!
