Physics Games

Post by Oyster Sauce »

I fucking love games that are centered around or heavily feature physics shenanigans. Any game that has a functional grappling hook you can whip around on is automatically a good game.

Grow Home/Grow Up are games where all you do is explore a big world and climb giant plants/mountains/floating islands to reach objectives. They get trivialized when you unlock the jetpack, but are still quite fun.

Outer Wilds takes place in a miniature solar system with planets full of crazy shit going on. Your spaceship and jetpack are a joy to use.

There was an Attack on Titan fangame that gave the player full individual control over the hip-mounted grappling hooks. The skill ceiling was immense and it even had multiplayer. The official games are a bit more like Spider-Man ones where the swinging is automated.

I wish there were more games based around playing with water physics.

I miss games that had hardware accelerated physics. The broken glass in mirror's edge comes to mind

I recently found a game through one of Robbaz's streams called The Enjenir. It seems to have been developed by real engineers and it has quite the realistic physics and building process (the video will show more than my poor vocabulary can explain, don't have to watch the full 6 hours, skipping around will get the idea across pretty soon. I personally am more familiar with the video where he tried to build a lighthouse, and the architecture accounted for the wind, and made it fall or wobble accordingly).

I have not done much research on it for now, but I would love to play it one day.

There's From Dust which is all about picking up and dropping materials to do objectives for your ooga boogas

Half-Life 2 had a great console command that let corpses properly interact with objects/each other, so they'd actually stack up as you killed guys and you could stand on top of them. It was pretty taxing back in the day though.

Enemies spawning constantly just outside your cone of vision was a real bummer

I hated that there was a cool object reconstructor gun that could only be used in multiplayer.

Isn't reconstruction the main gimmick of the next game I never played?

Yea and I played about 30 minutes before I put it down and never tried it again because the game takes place underground and focuses more on being a generic TPS iirc.
