If Exile III is not working right, read this section. One of the tips below may help.

Question:  Exile III crashes sometimes for no reason!

Answer: Several steps to try, which will eliminate most problems.

1. Select Preferences from the Options menu. Select Fewer Sounds. If

this doesn't help, turn off sounds. This will fix most problems.

2. Run Exile III with no other programs running.

3. Make sure you have 4 megabytes of free RAM.

Question:  I get crashes when targeting a spell or missile, and nothing

helps!

Answer: Select Preferences from the Options menu. Select No Targeting

Line.

Question:  The Exile III screen is really tiny!

Answer: Go into Windows preferences (in Windows 95, right click on the desktop), and select a monitor mode with a

different resolution. 640x480 is recommended.

Question: The Exile III screen colors are all bizarre!

Answer:  You need to play Exile III in 256 color mode. If you're using Windows 3.1, read the directions below. If you're using Windows 95, change the screen resolution by right clicking on the desktop and selecting Properties.

Question:  OK. I installed the game. It runs fine. It looks fine. But I

keep starving, if the monsters don't kill me first, and I don't have any

gold!

Answer:  Read the Playing Tips For Beginners section near the end of the

manual.

Question: Sometimes, when I switch to another window and

switch back to Exile III, the colors are all strange.

Answer: One of the other programs you're running is messing with Exile

III's color management. Quit everything else you're using (including the

fancy front-end programs some computers come with) and try running Exile

III again.

Getting 256 Colors in Windows 3.1

Exile III's graphics are designed for 256 colors. Should the graphics come up looking utterly bizarre, it is likely that your system is not currently set for 256 colors. If you are using Windows 3.1, following these directions should fix the problem:

1. Go to the Program Manager.

2. In the Main directory, run Windows Setup

3. In the Options menu, select Change System Settings.

4. You will be changing the Display setting, using the arrow control to the right. Select one of the settings that mentions 256 colors. Your best bet will probably be Super VGA 640x480 256 colors.

5. Hit OK, and follow the instructions you're given.

6. Restart the machine. Exile should be in living, vibrant color.

7. Doesn't that look much nicer? Have fun!

When being run, Exile takes over the colors in a system palette. Because of this, other applications may look somewhat odd. They will switch back to normal when Exile stops running.
